Paul “Rex” Miller, 93, of Solomons, MD , sailed into the Port of Heaven on December 23, 2021. Rex is survived by his wife and first mate, Donna, of 42 years, sons Paul Rex Miller, Jr. (Sue ) CA, Eric Miller (Teri) MD, daughter Kristen Lauver (Tom Devlin) MD, sister Louise Woods, MD, and 5 grandchildren.
Rex was born in Baltimore, MD in 1928 and graduated from the Baltimore MD Polytechnic Institute in 1946. He enlisted in the Navy in 1946 and served in the Navy and the Navy Reserves. He graduated from Johns Hopkins University School of Engineering with a ME Degree, received a Masters Degree from the University of MD and attended the Oak Ridge School of Reactor Technology in Oak Ridge TN.
Rex began his career in 1951 as an academic instructor and flight test planner at the Navy’s Test Pilot School at the Patuxent River Naval Air Base in Lexington Park MD, where he taught and flew with NASA Astronauts, John Glenn and Scott Carpenter. The test pilots inspired him to get his private pilot’s license and he flew with the FAA Flying Club for many years.
Subsequent employment was with the Atomic Energy Commission in Washington DC where he supported the Nuclear Ship Savannah Project. Following employment was with Martin Company and NASA. After retirement from NASA, he was employed by Schafer Associates in Arlington VA as a Program Advisor to an element of the Pentagon’s Strategic Defense Initiative Organization.
After retirement in 1997, Rex and Donna moved to Solomons MD, where his beloved Chesapeake Bay was close by. Rex was a member of the Solomons Island Yacht Club. As a boy his father took him on adventures on the Chesapeake Bay on the Baltimore Ferry, where he sketched the steamboats, airplanes and the water and sky. With adventure in his blood, he learned to sail and sailed the Chesapeake Bay over 60 years, with his most rewarding adventure being when he Captained his Tartan 37 sailboat to Bermuda, with the most exuberant feeling of returning to homeport via his beloved Chesapeake Bay.
Rex’s other passion was sketching and painting. After moving to Solomons he enrolled in the Advanced Oil Painting Class at the Calvert County Office on Aging, where he assisted in forming the Color and Light Society. He was a founding member of the CalvART Gallery in Prince Frederick, MD, a member of the North End Gallery in Leonardtown, MD and the Calvert Artists Guild. One of his most rewarding venues was being juried to exhibit his art at Ann Marie Garden Artsfests.
Rex was honored to be a Southern Maryland artist exhibiting his works of water, boats, sky and clouds, and his interpretation of the beauty of the barns and nature landmarks of Southern Maryland.
Rex said that “When someone bought one of my paintings I felt I had communicated with another person in this universe in a very special way and that is the most satisfying accomplishment an artist can achieve. ”
Rex was a member of the former Solomons United Methodist Church congregation.
Family received friends on Monday, January 10, 2022 from 12:00 p.m. until 1:00 p.m. with a Funeral Service following at 1:00 p.m. at Rausch Funeral Home, 20 American Lane, Lusby, MD. Interment began on Tuesday, January 11, 2022 at 11:30 a.m. in the Maryland Veterans Cemetery, Crownsville, MD.

Frederick “Fred” Walter Kuhn

Frederick “Fred” Walter Kuhn, 100, formerly of Funkstown, Md., passed away, Monday, January 17, 2022, at Somerford House, Hagerstown, Md.
Born October 8, 1921, in Burnsville, Braxton County, W.Va. he was the son of the late, Walter Cleveland and Anna Belle (Hoover) Kuhn. in addition to his parents, he also was preceded in death by a daughter, Charlotte passed away on December 29, 1955, and a son-in-law, Frank Woodring, passed away January 26, 2013.
Fred graduated from Burnsville High School in Burnsville, and was Valedictorian of the Class of 1942
Fred married Bonnie Ruth Mick June 21, 1945.
He served in the USAAF from April 1942 to October 1945. He was an aircraft mechanic on B-24’s and a military pilot with the 15th Air Force, 451st Bomb Group, 724th Squadron – served three months in the Mediterranean theater of WWII
After his military service he graduated from WVU in January 1950 with a B.S.M.E.
He was employed by Fairchild in flight test engineering and as a supervisor in liaison engineering. He worked for the legendary Dick Henson as a production test pilot on C-119’s, C-123’s, and modified C-47’s. He was then employed by Mack Truck as an engineer and supervisor in the Experimental Engine Test Lab. He was in charge of cold room testing and represented Mack Trucks as a cold weather expert at a National Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) meeting in Detroit, MI. He retired from Mack in 1983.
Fred was a member of Cornerstone Community Church (formerly Grace Brethren) where he served as Vice Moderator, Financial Secretary, Deacon, and usher. Was on the Missions Committee, taught Sunday School, helped with the S-O-S telephone ministry and the Family Altar broadcast.
He was one of the founders and was on the board of Cedar Ridge Children’s Home and Radio Station. He served on the board of Youth for Christ. He was a Gideon.
He was part of the volunteer staff of the Maryland Cracker Barrel magazine.
In addition to his wife, Bonnie, Fred is survived by a daughter, Suanne Kuhn Woodring. Grandson, Chad Woodring and wife Dawn. Great grandchildren, Clare and Lance Woodring.
His motto was a quote from Stephen Grellet. “I expect to pass thru this world but once. Any good therefore, that I can do, or any kindness that I can show to any fellow creature, let me do it now. Let me not defer or neglect it, for I shall not pass this way again.”
A Celebration of Life Service will be conducted at a later date.

Raymond Eugene Huffman, 89, passed away Tuesday, January 18, 2022 at the Braxton Health Care Center, Sutton, WV. Raymond was born August 18, 1933 on Hyre Run Road near Burnsville. He was a resident of Copen, WV most of his life and a lifetime Braxton County resident. Raymond is preceded in death by his first wife: Betty Howell Huffman; parents: Ernest and Ida May Huffman; Brothers: Carl, Ralph, Russell, Jimmy, June and Ray: Sisters: Martha Godfrey, Rena Godfrey, and Mary Keller; Son-in-law: Charles Cook, and Daughter-in-law: Kim Nicholson Huffman.
Raymond worked in the coal mines when he was young before going to work in the gas fields as a well tender. He worked 40-years for Mike Ross. He was also a farmer his entire life.
Those left to cherish his memory are his wife: Rosa Lee; Brother: Chester Huffman (Betty); Sister: Bonnie Riffle (Larry); Sons: Terry Huffman (Mindy), Jerry Huffman; Daughter: Carol Sue Cook; four grandchildren, four great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Family received friends for visitation on Saturday, January 22, 2022 from 11:00-1:00 PM. Funeral service followed at 1:00 PM in the Stockert Funeral Home & Cremation Chapel, Flatwoods, WV. Pastor Daniel Arnold officiated the ceremony. Interment followed the service in the Odd Fellows Cemetery near Burnsville, WV.

Walter D. Sillman
Walter D. Sillman, 81, passed away at home on Saturday, January 15, 2022. He was born on July 2, 1940. Walter lived in Lowther Hollow near Ireland, WV for 50 plus years and was a lifelong resident of Braxton County.
He was raised by his late parents Henry and Eva Sillman of Stone Coal, WV also proceeding him in death were his brother, Hylo Sillman and sisters: Velma Gibson, Esty Modestite and Laya Williams. Left to cherish his memory are brothers: Carl and Lonnie Sillman; sisters: Linda Tanner, Thelma Keener, and Ruby Sponaugle also his greatest accomplishment, his five kids, sons: David, Steven, and Robert Sillman and daughters: Connie Brown and Pearl Sillman; and four grandchildren.
Walter was a hard worker his entire life, toiling many hours on the farm where he lived. He was a kind and very giving person who was always there to lend a helping hand and was well liked by friends and neighbors.
Walter enjoyed fishing, hunting, lawn work and keeping a nice yard. He will truly be missed by all who knew him.

Jean Augusta Clark, 89, of Sutton, passed away Monday, January 17, 2022 at Braxton Health Care Center.
She was born on August 21, 1942, in Butler, PA to the late George & Lillian Weaver MacCord. Also preceding her in death was her husband, Morrison Lee Clark who passed away March 2, 2021.
Jean was a System Analyst for the Social Security Administration.
She is survived by her son, Jefferson (Jeff) Clark of Sutton; brother, George MacCord, Jr. of Chicago, IL.
Upon request she will be cremated. Memorial service will be scheduled at a later date.

Charles Robert Garvin “Chuck”, age 90 of Flatwoods, WV passed away peacefully on January 15, 2022 he was born January 13, 1932 in Centralia, WV to Javis and Ona (Clutter) Garvin.
Charles enjoyed spending time with his family, grandchildren, and friends. Charles served in the United States Army for five years during the Korean War. He received his purple heart and a bronze star; however, this was something he rarely spoke of.
He was a very dedicated worker and was most recently employed as a full-time security guard up until his retirement in August of 2021 at the age of 89. He never met a stranger and he always went above and beyond to help others. Charles was a devoted member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.
He is proceeded in death by his parents Javis and Ona (Clutter) Garvin, his brothers Woodrow Garvin, Adren Garvin, his sisters Emma (Garvin) Parker, Cleo (Garvin) Williams, Lorraine (Garvin) Lunceford, and an infant son Charles Brewster. His survivors include his sisters Louise (Garvin) Hines, Marjorie (Garvin) McCourt, brother in law and best friend James Lunceford, seven children Janet Quick, Javis Brewster, Candy Leach, William Garvin, Andrea Ramona, Sophronia Liplin, Crystal Pequignot, 17 grandchildren, 3 great grandchildren, and several step children. Charles was very loved and will be greatly missed.

Teresa Elizabeth Wentz, 52, of Easley, SC, formerly of Webster Springs, West Virginia, passed away on Thursday, January 13, 2022 at home.
She was born February 18, 1969, at Webster County Memorial Hospital to Sherley Ilene Simmons Wentz and the late George Wentz.
Teresa was a 1987 graduate of Webster County High School, and then went on to obtain a Journalism degree from West Virginia University and her Masters degree from the University of South Carolina.
In addition to her loving mother of Easley, SC, she is survived by brother, David Wentz (Donna) of Fountain Inn, SC; two nephews, Jeramey Wentz (Melissa), Joshua Wentz (Constance); and niece, Jessica Wentz (Justin Armitage).
In addition to her father, she was preceded in death by her maternal grandparents, Ezra and Leafie Simmons and paternal grandparents, Richard and Sarah Ina Wentz.
A visitation was held Wednesday, January 19, 2022 from 6:00 p.m. until 6:45 p.m. at Thomas McAfee Funeral Homes, Southeast, with the funeral service to follow at 7:00 p.m. in the Southeast Chapel.
A visitation was also held 1pm- 2pm, Saturday, January 22, 2022 at Dodd & Reed Funeral Home, Webster Springs. Graveside service followed upon our arrival to Hacker Valley Cemetery, Hacker Valley, WV; at approximately 2:45pm.

Ronald Eugene Conner, 57, of Sutton, went home to be with his Lord on Saturday, January 15, 2022 at his residence.
He was born July 24, 1964, in Elyria, OH, the son of the late, David William & Lois Ann Garretson Conner. Also preceding him in death was his daughter, Latasha Shey Wood-Conner.
Ronald was a Barber in the Braxton County area for many years and a member of Polemic Run Baptist Church.
He is survived by his son, Justin Garrett Conner of Sutton; brothers, Rodney David Conner of Martinsburg, WV, Robert Alan Conner (Lora) of Sutton; nieces, Brittany Conner, Amber Conner, Chyenne Conner; nephew, David Conner; and Ronald’s loving dog, Elvis.
Memorial service in his honor was held 12:00 pm, Saturday, January 22, 2022 at Polemic Run Baptist Church, Polemic Run Rd. Sutton, with Rev. Chip Rose officiating.

Bettie Lou Jarvis
Bettie Lou Jarvis, 82, of Gassaway, passed away on Wednesday, January 19, 2022 at the WV Caring Hospice Center, Elkins, WV.
She was born February 16, 1939 at Duck, WV to the late Jessy J. and Lucretia Tanner Paintiff.
In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her grandson, Adam Rollyson; brothers, Grover, Richard, Walt, Tom, Roy, and Russell; and sisters, Blanche, Ruby, and Stella.
Bettie was a homemaker and also worked for a while at Jim’s Roller Rink. She truly enjoyed taking care of her yard and loved the outdoors. Birdwatching was one of her hobbies. She liked to watch the Walker Texas Ranger TV Show and liked to listen to bluegrass music. Bettie was an avid quilter. She was a Christian by faith and was ready to go to her heavenly home. She was a problem solver who had high standards. Bettie loved her family and she will truly be missed.
Left to cherish her memories are her sons, Chelsie “Bud” Rollyson and companion, Renee Rollyson, and John Jarvis and wife, Vicki, all of Gassaway; grandchildren, Amber Francis and husband, Mike, Kristie Arbogast and husband, Bryant, Joshua Brown, Chelsea Sartin and husband, Danny, and Samantha Scarff; and sister, Bessie Rice. She is also survived by several great and great great grandchildren and her dog, Scooter.
Bettie’s graveside service was 1 P.M. Saturday, January 22, 2022 at Walnut Grove Cemetery, Strange Creek with Reverend Linn Schiefer officiating.

Donald Ray Chapman, 93, of Gassaway, WV, went home to be with the Lord on January 15, 2022 at WV Caring, Elkins, WV, with his loving, devoted wife of 67 years, Bessie, at his side. Due to Covid-19 protocols, his daughter, Sheila, was not permitted to stay with him.
Donald was born on November 18, 1928.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Cecil Ray and Elva Gay Chapman; brothers, Calvin Chapman, Robert “Jack” Chapman, Eugene “Gene” Chapman, and sister, Elsie Greene.
He is survived by his wife, Bessie, Gassaway; daughter, Sheila (Bill) Powers, Gassaway; granddaughters, Dawn Rae (David) Smith, Athens, WV and Allison (Doug) Beall, Normantown, WV; great-grandchildren, Kennedy Smith, Athens; Brody, Joel, Brooklyn, and Baby Beall on the way, all of Normantown; and several nieces and nephews. Also surviving is a sister, Anna Blair Reed, Clarksburg; and brother-in-law, Ronald “Don” Sears, Florida.
Donald was a self-employed painter for several years until he started working for Columbia Gas until he retired. He was a proud Air Force veteran. One of his assignments as an MP was a personal chauffeur for a general in Italy. At one time, Donald was a member of Engel Chapel, Gassaway.
Donald was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He loved his family and was always excited when he knew the grandchildren and great-grandchildren were coming to visit. Donald was a big fan of WVU basketball and football. He looked forward to watching the games until macular degeneration took his eye sight. After that, he continued to enjoy WVU games with the assistance of his son-in-law, Bill, telling him what was happening in the course of the games. Family Feud was another TV show he enjoyed. Donald was especially fond of his Pomeranian, King. He was a great guitarist (Chet Adkins style) and enjoyed playing with friends until he could not play any longer. His favorite song to play was the hymn, “In the Garden”.
Donald endured several debilitating health issues of which he never complained leaving him blind, with very limited ability to walk, talk, or hear. Now he can do them all and we are so thankful for that.
The family would like to thank the doctors and staff at the VA hospital, Clarksburg, WV; the Braxton County Senior Center; WV Caring, Elkins, and the nurses who came to the house for care Donald received. Thanks for all who gave prayers, sent cards, called, and brought food. May god bless you all.
A private graveside service with military rites was held at the Sugar Creek Cemetery, near Gassaway, with Pastor Joe Bob Truman officiating. The family would like to thank Pastor Joe Bob Truman for presiding over the graveside service and to Roach Funeral Home, Gassaway, WV, for handling the arrangements.

Kermit Lee Neff, age 60, of Cherryville, NC, went home to be with the Lord on January 18, 2022 at his residence.
He was born on February 16, 1961 in Summersville, WV. He is preceded in death by mommy, Faye Neff Adkins; dad, Arthur Neff; father, Chester Frame; mother, Lucille Grubb; grandfather, Squire Neff; brother, PJ Frame; sister, Pamela Frame.
He leaves behind a son, Andrew and grandson, Jackson Lough; step-son, Francis Lough; daughters, Krystal Lough, Dawna Lough; brothers, Allen Neff, Jeffrey Neff, Jamie Neff, Joey Frame, Rockie Frame, Stevie Frame, Samuel Neff, Edward Neff; sisters, Bertha Fisher, Judy White, Alice Nottingham, Margaret Wengstrom, Sarah Blair, Barbara Rogers, Tammy Frame Carolyn Frame; stepmother, Alma Frame; best friend, Gail Fisher; aunt, “Tootie”; his furbaby companions, Jasmine and Koty.
Funeral services will be held 1:00 pm, Wednesday, January 26, 2022 at Greene-Robertson Funeral Home, Sutton with Rev. Wadie Rose, Jr. officiating. Burial will follow at Rose Cemetery, Strange Creek, WV. Friends may call one hour before the service at the funeral home.
