Thurman Paul Shaver
Thurman Paul Shaver, 72, of Strange Creek, passed away on Sunday, October 1, 2023 at Braxton Memorial Hospital, Gassaway.
He was born January 16, 1951 in Sutton to the late Paul & Elsie Sponaugle Shaver. Also preceding him in death was his brother, Stephen Shaver; sister, Karen Hacker.
Thurman was a Musician and loved music. He also loved Civil War reenactments and hunting.
Left to cherish his memories are his brothers, James Shaver (Michele) of Buckhannon, Mike Shaver (Sue) of Parkersburg; sisters, Margaret Samples (Greg) who was his caregivers of Strange Creek, Vada Hacker (Tom) of Exchange; best friends, John Tenney and Melinda Wells and family.
Family received friends 6 to 8 pm, Friday, October 6, 2023 at Greene-Robertson Funeral Home, Sutton. A service was held at 7:00 pm. A private family burial was held.

Stanton Noel Given
Stanton Noel Given, 84, of Thomasville, Georgia, went to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on September 30, 2023. He was born on October 5, 1938, in Strange Creek, West Virginia, the son of Marvin O. and Blanche (Keener) Given.Stanton moved from Sutton, West Virginia to the Thomasville, Georgia area when he married his bride, Anna Lee (Beer) Given, in December of 2010. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and spending time with family. He was very proud of his time in the coal mining industry as an underground supervisor, and he had lots of humorous stories to tell!
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his first wife, Sandra Young; his brother, Edgar G. Given; and his brother-in-law, Kenneth Williams. Survivors include his wife Anna Lee (Beer) Given; Sons: Kerry N. Given, of Little Birch, WV (wife, Carolyn) and Kevin G. Given, of Duck, WV; Daughter: Denise Given Drake of Aliquippi, PA and Daughter-in-law: Debbie Stephens, of Monticello, FL; Sisters Violet Given
Cunningham (Dale), of Sutton, WV and Shirley Given Williams, of Sutton, WV; and Grandchildren: Hannah G. Given, Hailey B. Given, Triton C. Given, Christian N. Given, Brittany Conner, Aleena Ann, Garrison Drake (wife, Violet), Andrew Drake, and Gabriella Drake Newsome (husband, Kenneth).
The family will honor Stanton’s wish to be cremated without funeral services and buried in Sutton.

Larry Lane Lynch
Larry Lane Lynch, 75 of Webster Springs passed away September 30, 2023 at home. Larry was born August 15, 1948 in Webster Springs and was the son of the late Romey and Virgie Cogar Lynch. Along with his parents he was preceded in death by his wife, Dorine Kay Lynch and daughter Dawn Denise Lynch Metz.
Larry was a graduate of Webster Springs High School class of 1966. He was coal miner and worked for Island Creek Coal Company for many years; served on the Webster County Memorial Hospital Board for many years and also a member of the Webster County Democratic Executive Committee. Larry was a member of the Sand Run Baptist Church, he enjoyed playing basketball and also going fishing on the Elk River.
Surviving are his sons, Larry Loryn (Karen) Lynch and Landon Lane Lynch; 3 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren; siblings, Roger (Evelyn) Lynch, Warren “Bob” (Jenny) Lynch, Mike (Sandra) Lynch and Sheila Adkins.

Kenneth O. “Kenny” Davis
Kenneth O. “Kenny” Davis, 84 of King George, VA passed away at 8:45 am on Friday, September 29, 2023 at the home of his daughter.
He was born August 8, 1939 at Hodam Creek to the late Henry G. and Goldie M. Pugh Davis.
Kenny held several jobs over his career. He worked for the WV State Road, drove dozer for a mine company in Bergoo, and drove a coal truck for Hogan’s Trucking in Pickens. He then moved to Virginia and worked for Kentrist Tri-State and then William A. Hazel, Inc., retiring from there in 2006 as a heavy construction operator.
Kenneth and Diane enjoyed being able to visit family and friends in West Virginia and New York after their retirement. He enjoyed taking care of his lawn and playing with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, even if only seeing them over a video chat.
He is survived by three daughters: Wendy (Richard) Jansen of Chapman, KS, Brenda (Dan Mayo) Beer of Bealeton, VA and Laurie (David) Hawkins of Jacksonville, FL; two sons Gale (Kim) Davis of Pickens and Bobbie (Denise) Davis of Beverly; ten grandchildren: Ivy, Samantha, Carrie, Tina, Kenny, Adam, Jamar, Aaron, Malik and Austin; 13 great-grandchildren; three brothers: Carl (Kay) Davis of Buckhannon, Charlie (Pam) Davis of Charlestown, and Henry Jr. (Randa) of Hacker Valley; and several extended family and friends to mourn his passing.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 52 years, Diane E. Davis who passed in December of 2012; son, Kenneth O. Davis, Jr. and grandson, Nathan B. Davis who passed in 1993.
Funeral Services to celebrate Kenny’s life will be held on Saturday, October 7, 2023 at 2:00 PM at Dodd & Reed Funeral Home, Webster Springs, with Pastor Curt Davis officiating. Friends may join the family for visitation one hour prior to service time at the Funeral Home. Inurnment will take place at a later date.

Karen Sue Dennison Jones
Karen Sue Dennison Jones of Charleston West Virginia passed away at home on Monday, October 2, 2023.
Born in Sutton on June 25, 1945, Karen was the daughter of the late George W. and Lena B. Cutlip Dennison.
She was preceded in death by sister, Doris Gallaher, and brothers, Kenneth Dennison and Gaylord Clark Dennison.
Karen was kind hearted and loved animals. She was valedictorian of the Sutton High School Class of 1963. Karen obtained an associate’s degree from Glenville State College followed by a bachelor’s degree from Morris Harvey College. She spent her 34 year professional life first as a case worker for the WV DHHR in the Child Protective Services Division and later directed educational seminars for Child Protective Services. Karen was very dedicated to the wellbeing of the state’s underprivileged children.
Left to cherish her memories are nephews, Mark (Kathryn) Gallaher, Scott (Connie) Gallaher; and nieces, Ann (Richard) Koontz, Cheryl Haskell, and Emily Dennison; great nephews, Matthew Gallaher, Seth (Crystal) Adams; great niece, Courtney (Brad) Legg; great-great nephew, Ryan Adams; great-great nieces, Claire and Mia Legg. Also surviving is special friend and neighbor John Carter.
Her visitation was from 11 A.M. to 1 P.M. on Saturday, October 7, 2023, at Roach Funeral Home in Gassaway. Karen’s funeral service followed at 1 P.M. at the funeral home with John McQuain officiating. Burial was in Mt. Hebron United Methodist Church Cemetery, Sutton, WV.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in memory of Karen to the Braxton County Animal Shelter, 10 Animal Shelter Lane, Sutton, WV 26601 or Just One Generation, 4397 Elk River Road, Frametown, WV 26623.

Donna Marie McQuain
Donna Marie McQuain, 72, of Gassaway went to be with her Lord in the early morning of Thursday, September 14, 2023.
She was born September 21, 1950, in Sutton to the late George and Edith Carpenter Sanders.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sister, Carol Criner.
Donna graduated from Gassaway High School in 1968. In 1971, she graduated from Charleston General School of Nursing and began her long career as a Registered Nurse. She worked in several different areas including office nursing at Dr. Earl Fisher’s and Dr. Doug Given’s family practices, and Geriatric care at Braxton Healthcare Center and Big Otter Nursing Home. As a Cardiology Nurse, she worked at CAMC Cath Lab. Donna also did mental health nursing at Sharps Hospital. Reading books was a favorite pastime for her; however, she really enjoyed watching her two grandchildren play soccer and basketball. She was a member of the Engel Chapel Community Church.
Donna will be forever remembered by her husband of 53 years, Jimmy McQuain; her two sons, David McQuain and wife, Libby, of Flatwoods and Jerry McQuain (Jeremy) of Williamsburg, Virginia; grandchildren, Zack McQuain and Zoey McQuain; brothers Jimmy Sanders and wife, Nancy, of Bridgeport and Rusty Sanders, and wife, Shelly, of Wilmington; sister, Susan Case and husband, Gene, of Gassaway; brother-in-law, Jim Criner, of Gassaway; and several nieces and nephews.
In keeping with Donna’s wishes she will be cremated.
A Memorial Service for her will be 11 A.M. Saturday, October 14, 2023, at Roach Funeral Home, Gassaway with Pastor Tom Harper officiating.
Inurnment will follow in the Morrison Church Cemetery, Sutton.
Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

Jackie Lee “Jack” Davis
Jackie Lee “Jack” Davis 69, of Red House passed away Monday, October 2, 2023. He was a 1972 graduate of Braxton County High School and a graduate of Marshall University. He retired from Napa Auto Parts. Jacked loved hunting, fishing, horseback riding and attending auctions.
Born March 21, 1954 in Sutton, he was the son of Helen Beth Frame Davis of Sutton and the late Jackie Joe Davis.
In addition to his mother, he is survived by his loving wife of 38 years Regina Davis; son, Matthew “Brian” (Crystal) Davis of Myakka City FL; brother, Jerry (Sharon) Davis of Webster Springs; grandchildren, Emily Davis and Eric Davis; special friend, Sherry Mallett. Jack is also survived by several aunts, uncles, cousins, extended family and friends.
Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, October 8, 2023 at Greene-Robertson Funeral Home, Sutton, with Rev. Roby Godfrey and Pastor Richard Demastus officiating. The family received friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Burial followed in Davis Cemetery, Tesla.

Judy Butcher
Judy Butcher, 78, of Dille, passed away on Saturday, September 30, 2023, at her residence.
She was born August 6, 1945 in Strange Creek, WV to the late Donvil Wood. In addition to ther father, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Arthur Lee Nelson and second husband, Jerry Lee Butcher; brothers, Ledford Wood , Randy Wood; grandson, Jerry Allen Nelson.
Judy is survived by her sons, Larry Nelson (Sandra Rose) of Duck, Jeremy Burcher (Beth Davis) of Dille; daughters, Katheryn Nelson, Sandra Nelson both of Dille, Therese Belt ( Brad) of Duck; sister, Cheryl Starcher of Goshin, IN; grandchildren, Jennie Smith, Alicin Malenese, Andrew Nelson, Erin Hiner, Travis Belt, Dustin Belt; great grandchildren, Jackson Kind, Abbagail Hiner, Gracie Nelson, Michael Smith, Aubrey Malenese, Nellie Belt, Brandon Nelson, Cameron Nelson,
Upon her request the body will be cremated.

Marilyn Rae Gerwig James
Marilyn Rae Gerwig James, 88 of Gassaway, died peacefully at home Wednesday, September 27, 2023, surrounded by her husband and family.
Marilyn was born July 25, 1935 in Knapp, WV a daughter of the late Clarence “Criss” and Bea (Dobbins) Gerwig.
She attended the Engle one-room schoolhouse through 6th grade and was a 1953 graduate of Gassaway High School, where she was a majorette.
Marilyn is survived by her husband of 65 years, Johnnie James; children, Cheryl Gerwig Haugh (Barry) of Murrells Inlet, SC, Michael James (Debbie) of Corbin, KY, Jackie Turner (Brian) of Charleston, SC; sister, Joy Shepherd of Elkins; sisters-in-law, Jyrlene Jordan of Mesa, AZ and Maxine Hughes of Ravenswood; grandchildren, Chelsea Lutz (Tommy), Patrick Haugh, Amber DePra (Matt), Logan James, Sadie and Henry Turner; great grandchildren, Elliana Lutz and Natalie DePra; along with many nieces and nephews.
Marilyn was preceded in death by her brother and sister-in-law, Bill and Elsie Gerwig; sister, Alta Mae Jenkins; brother-in-law, Russ Shepherd; niece, Diana Lynn Jenkins; brothers and sisters-in-law, Cody and Kitty James, Jimmie and Virgie James, Glen and Neb James, Pauline and Bubby Mowery, Monk Jordan; niece and nephew, Sheila Mowery McCord and Freddy Mowery.
Marilyn was a Christian by faith, a member of the Old German Community Church, Rebekahs and the Order of the Eastern Star. Everyone will remember Marilyn as a great cook and the kids will remember her endless supply of candy. She also enjoyed western dancing with her husband, card games, word puzzles, and reading.
Graveside service was 11 a.m. Saturday, September 30, 2023 at the Belknap – Bender Run Cemetery on Chapel Road, Gassaway with Pastor Rick Hart officiating.
The family would like to extend a very heartfelt thank you to the Kanawha Hospice staff and WVU Home Health for their compassion, support and care for our wife and mother through the final days of her life.
