As we say goodbye to April and hello to May, the countdown has begun for the last few weeks of school. Let us celebrate some recent announcements about outstanding educators. First, congratulations to Braxton County’s Teacher of the Year, Jami Hefner, who teaches at Braxton County High School, and Staci Butler, who was named the 2024 Elementary School Mathematics Teacher of the Year. Congratulations to Braxton Middle School’s National Board-Certified Melissa Duckworth. Also, congratulations to Ethan Backus for being named the West Virginia Academy of Science Teacher of the Year.
In Gilmer County, congratulations to Jacob Wolfe, Gilmer County High Schools Teacher of the Year, and Elania Rhodes, Gilmer County Elementary Schools Teacher of the Year. Their dedication, commitment, and love of students and teaching are making a difference in the lives of students and our communities.
Teacher Appreciation Week is officially celebrated the first full week of May, but some schools will begin celebrating this week. Teachers hold a place of significance within our society. They instill a sense of purpose in students, prepare them for a successful future, and kindle a passion for achievement. Teachers are champions for their students, but for our educational system to thrive we need families to be supportive and encourage educational pursuits, and a strong community that values education and supports schools and teachers.
“A good teacher can inspire hope, ignite the imagination, and instill a love of learning.”

Congratulations to Evelyn Post for being named the recipient of the Glenville State University Alumni Association’s Community Achievement Award. Evelyn’s community involvement is inspirational and her work in our community has impacted countless individuals. Thank you, Evelyn, for giving of your time, talent, and treasure, and for caring so much about our citizens from the youngest to the oldest.
Please take a look at community calendars and area briefs in newspapers, and community postings on social media.
