John Wendell Tanner
John Wendell Tanner, 71 of Webster Springs passed away on Thursday, August 10, 2023 at Bowers Hospice House in Beckley. He was born April 3, 1952 in Diana to the late John H. and Ella J. Ware Tanner.
Wendell enjoyed listening to country music, watching television, collecting antique cars, and eating out at local restaurants. He was fun to be around and enjoyed a laugh.
In addition to his parents, Wendell was preceded in death by his brother Leslie Howard Tanner. Left to cherish his memory are his brother, Hubert “Bubby” Tanner of Diana; aunts Ella McCourt of Webster Springs, Elma Tucker and Evelyn Phillips, both of North Carolina, and Sharon Tanner and Donna Tanner, both of Ohio; several nieces and nephews; and many extended family and friends to mourn his passing.
Funeral Services to celebrate Wendell’s life were held on Thursday, August 17, 2023 at 1:00 PM at Dodd & Reed Funeral Home, Webster Springs with Pastor Butch Rose officiating. Friends joined the family for visitation two hours prior to service time at the Funeral Home. Interment will follow in Cogar Cemetery, Guardian.

Ernest Ray Sims
Ernest Ray Sims, 90, of Erbacon passed away on Sunday, August 13, 2023 at his home.
Born April 3, 1933 in Wainville, he was the son of the late Noble and Lillie (Carpenter) Sims. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his grandchildren: Travis Tinney and Katelyn Weese; brothers: Loyd and Clarence Sims; his sisters: Beulah Moore, Eula Lamb, and Audra Green; first wife and mother of his children: Virginia Ruth Sims; and his second wife, Georgia Mathes Sims Jackson.
Ernest was a proud United States Army Veteran during the Korean Conflict, and a coal miner. He was also a very skilled mechanic and worked in construction for some time. In his younger days, he enjoyed hunting and riding horses. He was a member of Gladeview Community Church.
Left to cherish his memory are his children: Ray (wife, Carol) Sims, Steven (wife, Rhonda) Sims, Roy (wife, Lori) Sims, Richard (wife, Amy) Hammons, Katherine (husband, Tom) Weese, and Diania (husband, Darrell) Bragg, all of Cowen, and Tracey (husband, Ronnie) Beckner of Rainelle; siblings: Forest Sims, Tommy Sims, Harry Sims, and Lela Wehr, all of OH; grandchildren: Chris (wife, Angie) Weese, Tommy (wife, Brooke) Weese, Shara (husband, Scott) Cochran, Allen Bragg, David (wife, Jennifer) Bragg, Robert (wife, Kayla) Sims, Amanda (husband, Dennis) Weese, and Ashley (husband, Kalem) McRae; his loving companion, Beatrice McKinzie; 19 great-grandchildren; 4 great-great grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends to mourn his passing.
Graveside services with Military Honors were held 1:00 pm, Thursday, August 17, 2023 with Pastor Craig Williams and Bro. Larry Joe Bragg officiating at Sims Family Cemetery in Erbacon.
In lieu of flowers, donations should be made to honor Ernest’s memory to American Legion Post 62, PO Box 846, Cowen, WV 26206 Attn: Honor Guard.

Shelba J. Moore
Shelba J. Moore age 86 of Gahanna, Ohio passed away Wednesday July 5th surrounded by her family in Grove City, Ohio.
She was born in Ansted, WV but grew up in Gassaway, WV and considered that her home. She was preceded in death by her husband Jackie G Moore of Chapel, WV her mother and step father Glada and Henry Kindle of Hilliard Ohio, her grandparents John and Eva Cantrell of Gassaway, WV, special cousin Carol Thompson, and several Aunts and uncles.
She is survived by sons Butch(Chris), Eric(Trudie) Jimmy, 14 grandchildren and 4 Gr. Grandchildren, Aunt Judy McMillion , special cousin Danny Cantrell, .an uncle, a niece Denese several cousins and a host of friends.
She was a Christian and attended the Baptist church.
She was described by her family as the strongest and most stubborn person yet was the most giving and loving grandmother and was there anytime you needed her. Also a spunky fun thrift store loving Mother and grandmother and was special to all her family. Many people have memories of her generosity and being there for them.
She was laid to rest beside her husband and mother at Forest Lawn Memorial Gardens in Columbus. Ohio.

Iris Ann Heater
Iris Ann Heater, 72, of Hyers Run, Burnsville, WV, passed away on August 13, 2023. She was born on May 29, 1951 to parents Russell and Betty Dean Losh.
Iris was preceded in death by her parents; grandson Anthony Heater and sister, Lisa Losh.
Iris and husband, Stanley, loved to travel especially to Colorado. She had always loved her yearly trips with her beloved sisters and enjoyed sharing memories, a ton of laughter, a little mischief and just had the best time of her life. She cherished the trips with her sisters but her favorite part of the trip was returning home to her husband, Stanley. Iris and Stanley lived in Wheeling, WV, for many years and attended Sandhill United Methodist Church. Iris loved her family deeply and enjoyed spending time with them. She graduated in 1969 in the first graduating class of Glenville High School. Iris also loved beautiful flowers.
She is survived by her loving husband of 51-years, Stanley; daughter, Kristina (Scott); son, Stanley Joseph Heater; daughter, Jennifer Millhouse (Richard, Jr.); grandchildren, Justin McFarland, Brooke Tennant (Marcus), Timothy McFarland, Ashley Heater, Emily Doran, Kimberly McFarland (Zach), Xavier Millhouse and Gavin Millhouse; brothers; Charles Losh (Karen), Doug Losh, Barry Losh (Malissa); sisters, Laura Jarvis, Karen Brunson (Steve), Joyce Ward, Cathy Losh, Annie Hernandez (Adrian), Victoria Garrant (Alan); several nieces and nephews and her beloved dog, Bella.
Service was held on Thursday, August 17, 2023 at 11:00 am at Stockert Funeral Home, Flatwoods, WV. Pastor Andy Fominko officiated the service. Visitation was on Wednesday, August 16, 2023 from 4-8 pm at the funeral home. Iris was laid to rest at Little Kanawha Memorial Gardens, Heaters, WV.

Arawanna “Katie” Kay Brown Cooper
Arawanna “Katie” Kay Brown Cooper, 83, of Old Womans Run, Sutton, WV, passed away on August 18, 2023, at home with her loving family by her side. She was born on November 8, 1939, in Sutton, WV to parents Alvin Alonzo and Juanita Mayse Brown.
Katie was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Dale Cooper; brothers, James Homer Brown (Hazel), Thomas Odis Brown (Sophia), John “Johnny” Alvin Brown, Howard “Budgie” Junior Brown, Harry “Cooney” Denzil Brown (Irma), and Edward LeRoy Brown.
Katie graduated from Sutton High School in 1957. When she was still young, Katie worked at Marlow’s Restaurant & Supper Club, at a five-and-dime store in Akron, Ohio, and operated a Dairy Bar in Sutton. She was a wonderful housewife and mother to her husband and 4-children. Katie was a babysitter to several children and her own grandchildren. She married her husband Dale on November 30, 1957.
Katie was a past member of the Sutton Homemakers Club and the Sutton Rebekah’s. She loved to sew, make plastic canvas projects, work puzzle books, liked any kind of gadgets, and especially loved family gatherings. She will be forever remembered for raising her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
Katie is survived by her children; Brenda Kay Kniceley (Kenton), Kenneth Dale Cooper (Janet Dean), Cheryl Agnes Hamrick (Douglas), and Sheila Jean Lancaster (Tim); grandchildren, Derrick Kniceley, Nicholas Kniceley (Kathryn), Logan Cooper Metz (Chris), Matya Facemire Drennen (Jeremy), Mary Hamrick, Nathan Dale Lancaster, Valarie Conant (DC); great-grandchildren; Katlyn Kniceley, Kylie Kniceley, Magnolia “Maggie” Metz, Abigail Conant and Carly Conant; sister, Velma “Sis” Geraldine Craft (Joe); brothers, Camden Horner Brown (Gudrun), Ricky Gene Brown (Janice); sister in laws, Cora May Graves, Emmaline Reed; brother in laws, Gene Cooper (Barb) and Bill Cooper (Toshi).
Service will be at 11 a.m., Wednesday, August 23, 2023, at Morrison United Methodist Church, 4839 Airport Rd, Sutton, WV. Pastor Jim Borrough will officiate the service. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, August 22, 2023, from 5-8 p.m. at Stockert Funeral Home, 378 Flatwoods Corner Rd, Flatwoods, WV.

Patricia (Johnson) Wine
Patricia (johnson) wine, was quietly escorted to her heaveny home on the evening of august 17, 2023.
Pat was born in panther, wv on feb 19, 1939; a daughter to raymond e. & ada (justice) johnson. She was known there by many friends and her family as “tea” and by nature became a collector of ‘tea’pots.
Pat’s father, mother, sisters, Rhonda, Lola, Wilma, Sue, Donna; and brother, Ray, had all passed before her. She spoke of them very often and would share fond stories at every opportunity to preserve their place in the family history. She leaves three brothers, teddy (Gaye), Harold (Lori), and Troy (Bunny), to continue sharing the Johnson legacy for her many nieces and nephews to enjoy and treasure.
She was a dedicated wife and mother for 66 years and kept a happy and loving home in Copen, WV. She left McDowell County at the age of 17 when she married grafton wine in december of 1956. Her children rise up and call her blessed…Bobby (Becky) Wine of Copen; Sarita (Jim) Gumm of Hamlin; Johnny of Exchange; and Tim (Kim) of Glenville. She fiercely loved and raised her children, loved all of her children’s friends, and loved so many of the nieces and nephews who came by to visit.
Her grandchildren were the joy of her life! Miranda (Andy), Natalie (Josh), Jonathan, Nathan (Briana), KJiesha (Dwight), Erik, Mariah, Timothy G (Cheyenne), Christian, and CJ (Aundrea). Grandma delighted in their company at sleepovers and gave each one their own special memory to cherish.
The great grandchildren, who called her ‘little granny’ loved her sparkle and her childlike stature. Tristin, Fallon, Logan, Owen, Caleigh, Walker, Anna, Rayland, Cayden, and Cameron, will always be her delight.
She was a member of the Copen United Methodist Church for more than sixty years and served in many positions there. She was a record keeper for the Braxton County Council of Churches for twenty plus years. She loved to sing for the lord and her distinct voice, whether soprano or alto, will ring forever in the hearts of those who were blessed by her heartfelt songs.
Pat was always willing to do her civic duty when asked to serve as a Clerk at the Copen Precinct for any election.
She loved to share her creative talents of cooking, canning, gardening, crocheting, quilting, painting, and scrapbooking with the local community and so many acquaintances who quickly became very good friends. Her hands were seldom idle.
Her special love of photography dates way back to her teenage days. If you met patricia, she had a picture of that moment. Her life is chronicled in the massive collection of picture albums she kept.
She lived life with vitality through the sports that her children and grandchildren participated in every season. Football, cheerleading, little league, softball, basketball, and cornhole. Her competitive spirit lives on in the generations that are still able to move.
Her presence was felt near and far by her prayers that were steadfast and faithful to the end. The family has made arrangements for a celebration of her life to be held. Service was at 3:00 pm on sunday, august 20, 2023 at copen United Methodist Church, Copen, WV. Pastor earl cayton will officiate the service. Visitation was two hours prior to the service from 1-3 pm at the church.
