Brenda Joyce Rogers
Brenda Joyce Rogers, 76, of Gassaway, went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, July 4, 2023 at her residence.
She was born on August 3, 1946 the daughter of the late Bunkie & Pauline Johnson. She was also preceded in death by siblings, Sylvia Tingler, Duane Johnson, Dennis Johnson and Michael Johnson.
Brenda worked for the United States Postal Service thru out Braxton County for many years and was a member of the Elk River Baptist Church.
She is survived by her son, Philip Rogers (Angela) of Land O’ Lakes, FL; brothers, Erle Johnson (Patricia) of Heaters, Jesse Johnson of Tacoma, WA; sisters, Paulette Waterman (Joseph) of Sutton, JoAnn Cook (Brace) of Gassaway; grandchildren, Ashleigh Rogers-King (Timmy) of Birch River, Kira Rogers of Tampa, FL; great grandchildren, Kaleb King of Birch River, Liam, Noah, and Tristian Rogers all of Land of Lakes, FL and Nolan of NC. Several nieces and nephews and special friends Barbara King, Janice Eblen, Marsha Johnson and Lola Malcomb.
Funeral services were held 2:00 pm, Sunday, July 9, 2023 at Greene-Robertson Funeral Home, Sutton with Pastor Brace Cook officiating. Burial followed at Little Kanawha Memorial Gardens, Heaters, WV. Friends called 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm, Saturday, July 8 at the funeral home.

Rocky Wayne Starcher
Rocky Wayne Starcher, 70, of Glouster, Ohio passed away on Thursday, July 6, 2023.
He was born January 10, 1953, in Sutton, West Virginia to the late John Harley Starcher and Virgie E. Lewis Starcher.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Tommy Eli Starcher; nephews, Kenny Holcomb and baby Cogis.
Rocky was a truck driver and a security guard. He had a strong work ethic. Fishing was his favorite pastime. He was friendly to everyone and would lend a helping hand to anyone.
He is survived by his four sisters, Bertha McCourt and fiancé, Ezra Westfall of Newville, Kathy Green and fiancé, Johnny Tenney of Craigsville, Connie Holcomb of Clarksburg and Norma Starcher of Sutton; brother, Lonnie Starcher (Linda) of Pennsylvania; two nieces; two nephews; three great nieces; and two great nephews.
Rocky’s funeral service will be 1 P.M. Wednesday, July 12, 2023 at Roach Funeral Home, Gassaway with Pastor Jim Criner officiating.
Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
Interment will follow in the Walker Cemetery, near Birch River, WV.

Elizabeth C. Brady
Elizabeth C. Brady, 79, of Gassaway passed away on Saturday, July 8, 2023 at Braxton Healthcare Center, Sutton, WV.
She was born in Paris, Texas on June 13, 1944.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her stepsons, Joseph Albert “Rusty” Brady and Randall “Randy” Stewart Brady.
Elizabeth loved being a grandmother. She enjoyed playing BINGO, doing puzzle books, reading magazines, and watching the Western Channel on TV.
She is survived by her stepson, Ronny Brady and wife, Marilyn, of Flatwoods; stepdaughters, Ronda Schrader of Oklahoma and Renee Norman of Bridgeport; and several step grandchildren, step great grandchildren and step great great grandchildren.
Her funeral service will be 2 P.M. Friday, July 14, 2023 at Roach Funeral Home, Gassaway with Pastor Jim Criner officiating.
Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
Interment will be in the Sugar Creek Cemetery, Gassaway.

Jose “Joe” Muñiz
Jose “Joe” Muñiz was born in Lares, Puerto Rico on May 14, 1940, to the late Jose Muñiz and the late Angela Gandarilla. He moved, with his family, to Cleveland, Ohio as a teenager. In 2006, he made Smithville, WV his new home. He passed away, surrounded by family, on June 23, 2023.
He was preceded in death by his brothers Jose Antonio, Enrique, Damian, Miguel, Ernesto, Raphael and dear sister Rosa. Jose was the beloved husband of Mildred. He is survived by his six children, Linda (Bobby Joe) Cottrill, Angie (Dave) Hardbarger, Tj Muñiz, Michelle (Chuck) McCroskey, Christopher (Kayla) Muñiz and Lisa (Josh) DeVaughn. His eleven grandchildren, Jessica (Dustin) Jeffrey, Aaron (Jackie) Hardbarger, Derek (Miranda) Hardbarger, Alicia (Matt) Schlarb, Olivia McCroskey, Hannah Muñiz, Malachi Muñiz, Parker Muñiz, Zeus Muñiz, Elizabeth Ludwig and Landon DeVaughn. And his eight great-grandchildren, Marissa, Chelsie, Caden, Salem, Caleb, Madilynn, Renee and Opal.
He loved being with family and sharing a good meal. He wouldn’t sit and eat until he knew everyone got their plate. He loved to be the host and server. He also loved classic cars, including his 1957 Chevy Bel Air. He loved chickens and gardening. He would always talk about his potatoes. His personality was larger than life and his kindness touched so many. He wanted to take care of everyone else, even when he was the one needing cared for.
He was a great man and a hard worker. He may not have made it past primary school, but he was very smart and able to figure things out. He learned the English language by listening to others. He could be silly and loved playing with kids. He never met a stranger and people seemed to have respect for him.
Being Puerto Rican in a small rural town made him almost famous. It seemed everyone knew “Papi” (or Popie as some May spell it). Others just called him Joe. Anyone that met him grew to love him. Everyone talked about his accent and how they loved to hear him talk.
Per his wishes, Jose will not be having a funeral service or viewing. Stump Funeral Home in Grantsville, WV provided the cremation services. There will be a celebration of his life held at the Smithville Community Building on Saturday, July 22, 2023 from 2:00 PM – 6:00 PM.

Maria Anna (Anastasia) Frame
Maria Anna (Anastasia) Frame, 96, of Gassaway passed away on Friday, July 7, 2023, at WVU Medicine United Hospital Center, Bridgeport, WV, surrounded by her family.
She was born September 20, 1926, in Lviv, Poland (Ukraine) to the late Frank and Tekla Sawicz.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 61 years, James R. “Sugar” Frame; three brothers, and two sisters.
Maria faced many obstacles during her early life. When she was 14 years old, she and her sister were taken to a forced labor camp in Germany during World War II. Upon liberation at the end of the war, a year later she met and married James in Germany. Maria came to America through Ellis Island as a war bride in 1946. She and James made their home in Gassaway and raised three children. She was a lifelong member of St. Thomas Catholic Church and Altar Society. Cooking for family and friends, gardening, talking and especially cooking with her grandchildren and watching TCM movies were her favorite pastimes. Maria was fluent in over seven languages.
Left to cherish her memories are her children, Christine Allen and husband, Richard, of Gassaway, James R. “Jim” Frame, II of Gassaway (Kathy Porter of Sutton), and Mary Anne Ferrell (Diane Harnish) of Winter Garden, Florida; grandchildren, Zachary Allen, Kyle Allen, Halle Ferrell, Sara Ferrell (Trey McGee); and numerous nieces and nephews.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 1 P.M. Thursday, July 13, 2023, at St. Thomas Catholic Church, Gassaway with Father Thien Duc Nguyen as Celebrant.
Visitation will be one hour prior to the mass at the church.
Interment will follow in Sugar Creek Cemetery, Gassaway.
In lieu of flowers the family requests memorial donations be made to the St. Thomas Catholic Church, 624 Kanawha Street, Gassaway, WV 26624 or to the World Central Kitchen, Ukraine at https://www.wck.org/donate.

William Matthew “Bill” Johnson
William Johnson Age 91 of Dallas, Texas passed away peacefully with his children holding him at 5 PM on June 21, 2023. His daughter Connie Sue observed that 5 PM was “quitting time” at his job of 34 years at E-Systems in Garland, Texas.
Bill was born on December 31, 1931 in Braxton County, the eldest son of Dana Everett and Edith Pearl Woods Johnson. He graduated Sutton High School in June 1950 and enlisted in the United States Air Force. After the Air Force he entered West Virginia University in the Fall of 1954 and graduated in the Spring of 1958 with a BS in Electrical Engineering. He had many job offers, but opted to return to Texas where he had been stationed during his military career. He married Margaret Anne Righter of Shinston, WV right after graduation and they moved to Texas where he spent the next 55 years.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers Bob and John and sisters JoAnn, Greta and Shirley. Surviving family includes his brothers Tom, Larry, Mike and Buddy; children Steven (Elsa) Johnson of Sammamish, WA; Scott Johnson of Dallas, TX and Connie Sue Funk of Houston, TX; Grandchildren include Mary Margaret Johnson of Buffalo, NY; Garrett Johnson of Seattle, WA; Tait Funk of Houston, TX; Matthew Johnson of Dallas, TX; Alyssa Johnson of Bellevue, WA and Christina Funk of Houston, TX.
Final interment will be at the DFW National Cemetery on July 18, 2023 with Rev. Dr. Veronica Davis officiating.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Texas Kidney Foundation.

Rebecca Ann Keenan Williams
Rebecca Ann Keenan Williams was called home to be with the Lord on Friday, July 7,2023 at 10:17 am. Beck battled with both Lung and Brain Cancer for the last four years as she waited upon the lord to make her journey home.
Beck was a daughter, wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister and aunt. She was born and raised in Spangler West Virginia (Kanawha County) but spent her last 40 years in Craigsville, WV (Nicholas County). She enjoyed gardening, sewing, quilting and spending time with her family.
Beck is preceded in death by her love of 45 years, Doy Williams. Her parents Charlie and Ruby Garten Keenan, sisters: Ada Page, Loretta Spencer, Helen Hudnall, and Brenda Keenan. Her brothers: Thomas Keenan and Bob Duff. Beck is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Corrine and Jeff Lynch, of Summersville, WV. Three grandchildren; Shatona (Trampus) Wolfe, Austin (Rebekah) Lynch and Laura (Ely) Osbourne. She was blessed with great-grandchildren, John Tyler Ritter, and JoyAnna and Jenessa Lynch and step great grandchildren, Louden and Samarra Wolfe. She had a special bond with her step-grand daughters, Melinda Powers and Tabitha Wood. Beck is also survived by her siblings Mary (Gary) Brown, Charles (Sheryl) Keenan, John Keenan, Doris Keenan, Sue (Gene) Fekete, Joan (James) Balser and Hester Nichols. She is also survived by three step-children, Dana (Karen) Williams, RoseMary (Jim) Dewey, Kay Ward and their families and a host of nieces and nephews.
Rebecca’s services were Sunday, July 9, 2023 at Liberty Union Mission Church, Woodbine Road, Craigsville, WV with Rev. Jerry Hayhurst officiating. Visiting hours were from 2:00-3:00 pm and Funeral services at 3:00pm. Burial followed at the Alex Williams Cemetery, Cranberry Ridge.
