Ruby Mahala Singleton Vernon
Ruby Mahala Singleton Vernon was very caring, polite, considerate, generous, patient, understanding, loving, giving and forgiving.
She would go out of her way to make others feel special, to make them happy or feel more confident in themselves. She was sensitive to others’ feelings and cared what others had to say. She loved to cook and bake for others and would always send plates of food to neighbors and friends. She helped prepare food for church events or wherever and whenever it was needed. She made the best coleslaw!
Ruby Mahala Vernon, age 101 of Dundalk, MD, died in Dundalk, MD of natural causes on March 20, 2024. She was born in Salt Lick District of Heaters, WVA on August 13, 1922 to Sarah Ella Posey and Charles Ellis Singleton.
Through the years, Ruby built a beautiful life with her late husband, James Clark Vernon, who departed on November 24, 1994. Together, they raised a loving family that felt the love and care she poured into every moment spent with them. Ruby’s children, Donna Jean Johnson and her late husband James Johnson, Dennis Clark Vernon and his wife Barbara Jill Vernon, and James Ira Vernon and his wife Robin Lynn Vernon have been a testament to the incredible life she led. Her legacy lives on through her nine grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren, one of which is in the oven.
Ruby was loved by so many. Some of her closest people included her sister, Gladys Whaley, her sister-in-laws Mary Vernon and Kathleen Vernon, her nieces Hazel Williams, Evelyn Pribble, Ida Snow, Virginia Knight, Betty Straley and close friend Francis Stapleton. These folks were practically inseparable throughout their lives. They enjoyed shopping, vacationing, crafting and gathering for special events.
Ruby will always be remembered for her love and kindness. Everyone who knew Ruby knew how much she loved to bake and quilt and window shop. She made the best Red Velvet and Carrot Cakes. We’ll always imagine hearing her say one more time, “Do what now?, and I’ll write you a check!” Ruby was also an active member of the Dundalk Church of God.
We couldn’t have asked for a better mother/grandmother and will miss her every day. Her memory will live on in the hearts of all those who loved her.
