Gassaway Town Council to sponsor a Party in the Park

By Shirley Shuman

On April 20, the Gasaway Town Council will have a pig roast with musical entertainment as a fundraiser for the special events the town plans for Gassaway Days in July. Spearheading the plans for Gassaway Days, which will return to the “old time” Gassaway Days, are Rocky Nutter and Sandy Whitesel Simmons.

Parkers’  Barbecue is doing the pig roast, and the Braxton Kowboys will provide the entertainment for the event. Admission fee is $15, which will cover the food, the music and the community time together. A word of advice: Bring your own chairs. Everything begins at 11 a.m. and ends at 4 p.m.  In case of rain, everything will be moved to the community building.

Food offered will include pork barbecue or chicken, potato salad, cole slaw, baked beans, and a soft drink. Hot dogs will also be available for anyone who prefers them and a bake sale is planned for those with a sweet tooth. The organizers also announced that delivery will be available and can be obtained by calling 304-644-3203.

Nutter and Simmons also discussed two of the attractions which have already been scheduled for Gassaway Days. Both will be free. One which should attract those interested in ice skating and/or bumper cars can look forward to both on the ice rink which will be set in Gassaway Park. Simmons explained that the rink, which uses artificial ice, will have divisions not only for skating and bumper cars but also for ice hockey.

The second scheduled attraction features an acrobat who will perform on the “Wheel of Death” 40 feet in the air. This will be available at the Kenton Meadows field, Nutter explained. He said,  “Our main focus is trying to provide as many free activities for kids and adults as we possibly can. So the more support we have with our fundraisers, the more free activities  we can have. We want Gassaway Days to be interesting and fun again.”
