The Braxton girls’ track team finished fifth in Winfield’s track meet last Friday, but Coach Robert Lloyd was quick to point out that the four teams ahead of Braxton were all AAA schools.  Braxton is A in track.

The definite highlight of the Winfield meet for the Lady Eagles was the 4X400 relay team’s breaking a 35-year old BCHS record for that event by seven seconds. The old record, set in 1990 by Debbie Rexroad, Amy Hickman, Danielle Harper, and Jennie Cunningham,  was 4:35.  Reece Carpenter, Leah Payne, Addison Lloyd, and Bethany Payne crossed the finish line at  finished at 4:27.85 for first place and the school record.

Braxton’s other first place came as Bethany Payne won the 400 meter dash with a time of 1:02. 03. Laura Cain placed second in the 3200 meter run for the next highest finish for the girls. Braxton also had five third place finishes, two fifth places, and one sixth.

Coach Lloyd pointed out other important accomplishments during the Winfield Classic and discussed the meet itself.  Nevaeh Flint had a PR in the 300 meter hurdles and is only four seconds from the school record.  For the boys, Jorge Campos broke his own personal record in the one mile by 28 seconds, which his coach called “a huge gain.”

Commenting in the meet itself, Coach Lloyd noted, “The Winfield meet is a very well run meet. We went there for the competition for everyone. We believe in challenging our athletes to go up against bigger and sometimes better schools.”  He added, We honestly believe that is why these athletes keep coming close to and breaking the school records.”

This week, the teams travel to Buckhannon Tuesday and to Morgantown Saturday.
