Judy’s Garden Club Appreciates Community Involvement

Spring is a busy time for gardeners and Judy’s Garden Club had extra preparation this spring as the West Virginia Garden Club Conference was held at the Days Inn in Flatwoods at the end of March. Over 100 WVGC members and guests registered for the 3-day event.
One of the standing activities at WVGCI Conference is a gardening project to benefit the community where the conference is being held. Since Braxton County is the home of Judy’s Garden Club, Appalachian District, the members brainstormed locations for this gardening project and were happy to be able to plan a raised garden box for the Braxton Health Care and Rehabilitation Center located near the Days Inn.
The WVGCI budget for conference activities is limited so member Beth Atkins contacted Rexroad Supply in Gassaway, and they generously donated the lumber for the 12’X4’ garden box and Pat Mcpherson arranged a generous soil donation from Freedom Ag. The box was constructed by family volunteers, plants were donated by members and the box was filled and planted by 15 WVGC members during the conference. JGC and WVGC members are very appreciative of the donations from these local businesses.
Six Judy’s Garden Club members attended the conference enjoying the sessions on flower arranging, herbs, orchids and care of house plants under the theme of planned for “Swing into Spring”. Awards were presented at the conference. JGC earned 4 youth awards and an award for the Frametown Post office Project! Brenda Moore, NGC President, spoke at the Saturday Banquet.
Other local funds allowing JGC to maintain projects at the Community Garden and the planters on the Sutton streets came from Citi National Bank and the Town of Sutton. Judy’s Garden Club appreciates these donations as well as pine tree seedlings from Elk Conservation and all the support from community members. Anyone interested in being part of JGC is welcome to inquire at the local libraries or contact a member. The April meeting will begin with the Adopt a Highway project in Frametown followed by a meeting at T. Moore’s home. Happy Spring planning!
