Martin Aloysius Kroll
Martin Aloysius Kroll, age 82, of Sutton, WV passed away on Saturday, March 22, 2025.
He leaves behind his wife of 58 years – Anita Kroll and 5 children – Marty Kroll (Donna), Mike Kroll (Michelle),
Sam Kroll (Heidi), Debbie Kemp (Marvin), and Andy Kroll (Sara), as well as grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
He moved to West Virginia from Pennsylvania in the late 1960’s. He was an auto body mechanic. He enjoyed being outside farming and gardening. As one of Jehovah’s Witnesses he enjoyed sharing his faith with others.
A memorial service will be held at the Sutton Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses on Wednesday, March 26, 2025, officiated by John Foster.

Harold “Junior” Holmes
Harold “Junior” Holmes, 78, of Birch River, entered into his heavenly home on Thursday, March 20, 2025.
He was born in Sutton on September 27, 1946, to the late Harold Emerson Holmes and Arlene Dixie Frame Holmes.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Lonnie Holmes.
Junior was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting and fishing. Sundays were spent driving the backroads. When the timing was right one could find him foraging for ginseng and mushrooms. Junior was an asphalt plant manager and ran a rock quarry in Birch River earlier in his work career. He also worked road construction and heavy equipment on Route 19 when they expanded the lanes in 1980’s. He enjoyed being with his family. Like most people he had big dreams to go cross country in a RV, but he never made it. Right before he passed away, he told his family that he was going fishing with his own father (in Heaven). He will be missed.
Left to cherish his memories are his wife of 58 years, Malisia Dobbins Holmes; son, Harold Junior Holmes II of Little Hocking, Ohio; daughter, Crystal Holmes of Birch River; stepson, Jerry Lynn Dobbins and wife, Tammy, of Lexington, KY; siblings, Garrel Holmes and wife, Kate, of Birch River, Patricia Holmes Wilson and husband, Clyde, of Birch River, Darrel Holmes of Birch River, Linda Casto and husband, Virgil, of Canvas, WV, and Tim Holmes of Birch River; and several nieces and nephews.
Junior’s visitation was 5 to 7 P.M. on Sunday, March 23, 2025, at Roach Funeral Home, 708 Braxton Street, Gassaway.
His funeral was held 12 Noon on Monday, March 24th at the funeral home with Reverend Linn Schiefer officiating.
Burial followed in the Birch River Cemetery, Birch River (near the elementary school).
The family would like to give special thanks to all the nurses at the Kanawha Hospice for their compassionate care of Junior.

Betty Colleen Nicholson
Betty Colleen Nicholson of Burnsville, WV passed away on March 21, 2025.
Betty was born in Braxton County on April 26, 1937, a daughter of the late Howard “Foss” Heater and Irene “Sis” (Helmick) Heater. In addition to her parents, Betty was preceded in death by six siblings, Richard, Tom, Roy, Louise, Junior and Samuel.
Surviving are her two children, Freeman Jr. and wife Debbie of Burnsville, and Donna Summers and husband, Kenny also of Burnsville; five grandchildren, Deanna West of Ritchie County, WV, Daniel Nicholson of Buckhannon, Thomas Nicholson and wife Chasity of North Carolina, Tamara and Taran Nicholson of Burnsville; six great grandchildren, Dakota Wayne and fiancé, Hannah White of Huntington, Kaitlyn and Colin Nicholson of Buckhannon, Brier, Liam and Grayson Nicholson all of North Carolina; one sister, Billie Gill of Burnsville and niece, Katie Gill; her special friend, Judy Wiant and many nieces and nephews. Betty is also survived by her loving church family.
Betty was employed for 33-years by the Braxton County Board of Education working at Burnsville Elementary School. She was a member of the Little Kanawha Independent Church of Burnsville for 47-years. She was a Sunday School Teacher, a Youth Leader and also taught and helped in vacation bible school. Betty loved to get involved in all church activities and loved to sing gospel songs. She sang at church and revivals and was faithful to her church when her health allowed. Betty was saved by grace and Lived by Faith. She also enjoyed reading about the Amish, crocheting afghans and loved sending cards to all her friends and loved ones.
Service will be held at 1 pm, Sunday, March 30, 2025 at Stockert Funeral Home, 378 Flatwoods Corner Road, Flatwoods, WV. Visitation will be two hours prior to the service from 11-1 pm. Final resting place will be in the K of P Cemetery, Burnsville. WV.

William “Gene” Eugene Hibbs
William “Gene” Eugene Hibbs, 92, of Weston, WV passed away March 21, 2025 at Stonewall Jackson Memorial Hospital.
He was born in Burnsville, WV on November 28, 1932. Gene was the son of Elza Hibbs and Ethel Heater Hibbs.
Gene retired from Stonewall Resort where he worked in the maintenance department. His favorite pastime was hunting and fishing.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Ida Belle Mick Hibbs.
He is survived by his companion, Judy Hardman; 2-daughters, Teresa Vickers of Kentucky and Shirley Linger of Buckhannon, WV; 4-sons, Mike of Gassaway, WV, David of Kentucky, Steve and Henry of Weston, WV; grandchildren, Kimberly Vickers of Kentucky, Bill Hibbs of Princeton, WV, Cynthia Smith of Weston, WV, James Hibbs and Steven Hibbs.
Gene’s wishes to be cremated will be honored by his family. No services are planned at this time.

Rodney Allen Carpenter
November 13, 1969 – March 16, 2025
With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Rodney Allen Carpenter on March 16, 2025, at Mon General Hospital in Morgantown, WV. He was 55 years old.
Rodney was born on November 13, 1969, in Medina, Ohio. A hardworking and determined man, he built a life around his passions and talents. He was a proud truck driver and owned his own trucking business for several years, embodying dedication and perseverance in all he did.
Beyond his work, he was a Christian by faith with a huge love for the Lord. Rodney had a larger-than-life personality that left a lasting impact on everyone he met. He had a gift for making people laugh, often coming up with funny songs and jokes that brought smiles to those around him. His sense of humor, quick wit, and kind heart made him truly unforgettable.
Rodney also had a deep love for the outdoors and spent much of his time hunting, working on cars and could fix anything no matter what it was. He cherished moments spent with friends, but above all, his greatest joy was being with his family.
Rodney leaves behind a legacy of love and cherished memories.
He is survived by:
His loving mother, Charlotte Carpenter, His beloved children: Travis Carpenter (Tiffany Carpenter), Cara Boggs (Dustin Boggs), Gabriel Carpenter, and Chantella Feeney, His adored grandchildren: Hunter Carpenter, Chase Carpenter, Brooklynn Carpenter, Cynthanie Conley, and Elizabeth Conley, His brother, Ricky Carpenter (Shirley Carpenter), His nieces: Shaela Woody, Shanna Carpenter, and Haylee, His Nephews: Jordie Carpenter and Jesse Carpenter, And many others that will cherish his memory.
He was preceded in death by his father, Richard Carpenter.
Rodney’s laughter, kindness, and unforgettable spirit will be deeply missed but never forgotten.
A time of remembrance was held 7pm, Saturday, March 22, 2025 at Dodd & Reed Funeral Home, Webster Springs. Friends joined the family from 6-7pm, prior to the service.

Sherley Iline Simmons Wentz
Sherley Iline Simmons Wentz, 94, widow of George Donald Wentz, went to be with the Lord on Friday, March 14, 2025 while residing at The Springs in Simpsonville. Born on August 25, 1930 in Hacker Valley, WV, she was a daughter of the late Ezra Simmons and Leafie Lizzie Fisher Simmons.
Sherley worked several jobs in retail. She was employed at Cutlip’s Department Store and also worked at Walgreens in the prescription drug department. Sherley enjoyed working in the garden and sewing. She loved cooking Sunday dinner for her family and was of the Methodist faith.
Sherley is survived by her son David Wentz (Donna); three grandchildren, Jeremy Wentz (Melissa), Jessica Wentz, and Joshua Wentz (Constance); and a brother, Hurley Simmons. In addition to her husband and parents, Sherley was preceded in death by a daughter, Teresa Wentz; a brother, Millard Simmons; and a sister, Betty Mader.
A visitation was held on Sunday, March 16, 2025 at Fletcher Funeral Service from 2:00 pm – 3:00 pm. A funeral service followed in the chapel beginning at 3:00 pm.
A second visitationwas held on Friday, March 21, 2025 at Dodd & Reed Funeral Home, Webster Springs, WV from 2:00 pm- 3:00 pm. A funeral service followed in the chapel beginning at 3:00 pm. Sherley was interred at Hacker Valley Cemetery following the funeral.

Elizabeth Luzier Beckett
Elizabeth Luzier Beckett passed away March 11, 2025, in Conroe, Texas. She was the daughter of Agnes Riffle Carpenter and the late Edgel Luzier. She was a former resident of Craigsville, WV.
Elizabeth was a graduate of Glenville University and an employee of Lone Star Downhole Products LLC.
Preceding her in death were her son Allen Hurst, father Edgel Luzier, sister, Loretta Foster, husband Leslie Beckett and sister Beverly Barbe.
Remaining here to cherish Elizabeth’s memory are her grandson Braiden Mullins, daughter Rebecca Griffith and son-in-law Cecil Griffith, ex-husband Herman Hurst and spouse, Delores, nephews Kenney Gum and Bradley Barbe and numerous friends.
Elizabeth was a very active Democrat and a former NCDEC committee member. She was very involved in her community in Craigsville. Most important in her life was her grandson Braiden. Libby, you will forever be in our hearts.
A gathering of family and friends will be held from 6:00 pm until 9:00 pm on Sunday, March 16, 2025, at Morris Funeral Home, Cowen, WV. Libby’s wishes for cremation will then be honored.
