Eight students from BCHS recently participated in the 10th-12th grade Region 4 Math Field Day event at WVU Tech. Students from Pocahontas, Nicholas, Greenbrier, and Fayette counties also participated. Nicholas won the team trophy.
Of those eight Braxton students, three students finished in the top 15 at the event. Tenth-grader Audrey Duckworth finished 13th, and senior Owen McCallister finished 11th. Mason O’Dell, also a senior, placed eighth. O’Dell qualified to participate in the state Math Field Day event on April 11 at West Virginia State University. McCallister and Duckworth are first and third alternates, respectively.
High School Math Field Day director Dr. Ethan Backus commented on his students’ achievements. “Our students performed very well this year. This is by far the best performance we have had as a school at Regional Math Field Day since I have been helping with the event, “ he said.
“It is great to see students like Owen and Mason who have participated in the event for several years finish in the top 15. It is also great to see students new to the competition, like Audrey, do so well in their first year of participation. Of the eight students that went to event, four of them will be able to participate again next year, and hopefully we will have more students place and more students will be able to qualify for state Math Field Day,” he added.
