While one of the last to address the Braxton County Commission at their regular meeting on Friday, March 7, Sheriff Eddie Williams had the most requests. The county elected official first requested that the Commission adopt a Bomb Threat Plan for the Courthouse complex. Sheriff Williams stated that the plan was the same one the Commission had reviewed during a recent work session. After hearing the explanation, Commissioner Larry Clifton made a motion to adopt the plan.
Second on the Sheriff’s agenda was a request to advertise and accept applications for deputy sheriff’s positions. Williams stated that he would like to run the ad for three weeks to build a pool of prospective applicants to be used to fulfil future needs.
Additionally, he requested that salaries be increased for recently promoted Deputies: Lt. Johnson $100 per month, Sgt. Westfall $80 per month and Cpl. Williams $60 per month. Both requests were approved via separate motions.
EMS Director Tiffany Prio’s monthly active report for the Ambulance Service was presented by her assistant. She also requested financial assistance, if necessary, for the month of March in meeting the payroll. The request was granted.
Tyler Long, 9-1-1 Director presented his agency’s active report for February.
Donald Conrad, OES Director, requested that an intergovernmental agreement with Burnsville be approved. The Commission approved the request on a motion by Larry Clifton.

Assessor Edie Tincher publicly thanked the Sheriff’s Department for their recent quick response to her home when she believed there may have been an intruder.
In other action, the Commission approved the probate appointments for the month of February as aproved by the Fiduciary Supervisor as well as the final settlement in the estate of Melba Furn Freeman.
The Commission also approved the request to consolidate contiguous tracts of land for tax purposes for Alphones and Cynthia Scribani.
Two purchase orders came before the Commission for consideration. Both were approved. Kustom Signals Inc. will provide a Pro Lazer 4 Radar Kit to the Sheriff’s Department at a cost of $2,357.95. Heritage Fire Equipment was authorized to repair the nozzle motor and wiring on the County’s new ladder truck at a cost of $2,846.36.
Commission President Lisa Godwin provided her fellow commissioners with information that the Town of Gassaway had agreed to changes in Trail to Town Connector project and would be co-sponsors of the grant with the Commission.
A request from County Clerk Sue Rutherford to use the county P-card to secure room reservations for staff members to attend election training was approved.
The Commission authorized the reimbursement of expenses for commissioners to travel to Washington, DC for a meeting with the County grant writer and elected officials.
The Commission reviewed a request from the County Fire Chiefs to sell the old ladder truck at auction with the proceeds to be used for maintenance and repairs to the new unit. President Godwin said the County was tentatively planning a surplus equipment auction for the spring which could include the vehicle.
Larry Clifton made a motion to officially adopt the county’s local government purchasing policies and procedures to be in compliance with the State Auditor.
Separate motions approved the County and EMS bills for payment and the minutes of the Commission’s board of equalization meetings and regular meeting of February 21.
There being no further business to consider, the meeting adjourned at 9:38 a.m. The next regular meeting of the Braxton County Commission will convene on March 21 beginning at 9:00 a.m.
