Crystal Leanne Godfrey
Crystal Leanne Godfrey passed away February 1st, 2025, at the Fountains of Melbourne with her husband by her side. Crystal was just shy of 60 years old and lived an amazing life of 59 years. Crystal was born in Sutton, West Virginia and held the title of middle child in her large family. Although she was in the middle there was nothing average about her. Crystal was a special daughter, a loyal sister, a supportive wife, a wise aunt, a protective and caring mother, and a warm and loving grandmother. She was loved by all for her wittiness and innate sense of humor.
She moved from West Virginia to Florida in her early 20’s and stayed there for most of her life. She earned her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in business administration while working full-time and being a full-time mother. As a mother, she made everything, even the mundane everyday things, into an adventure. As a grandmother, she encouraged creativity and fun.
She was a constant learner and when she wasn’t learning she was teaching – whether in Sunday school, as a substitute teacher, or a teacher to her family. Her goal as she aged was to impart wisdom to the next generation.
Crystal was a published author at a very young age when she won a Mother’s Day poetry contest in junior high. She had an interesting relationship with words and their pronunciation. She elected to be called “Abuela” instead of Mamaw because she thought it was a beautiful word. Marleigh and Harper loved their Abuela.
Crystal loved bicycling and swimming and often would achieve her “hundred miles in a month” where she rewarded herself with shopping money. She engaged her whole family in this lofty goal and remained active for as long as she possibly could. Her sisters and nieces enjoyed long walks with her as she shared her many sayings, wisdom, and sage advice -not much that we adhered to frankly. She was simply the funniest person ever in all our lives.
Crystal worked most of her life at Harris Corporation as a top tier Buyer. This involved researching, evaluation, and purchasing products for the company and she excelled in her career. Her contagious happy personality gained her many friends amongst her colleagues.
Like the four-leafed clovers that Crystal so easily found and plucked from the fields, Crystal was not typical – always the lucky one when none of us could find the treasure. She was indeed the treasure – highly valued and appreciated for just being Crystal. We all wanted to be around Crystal because she could always make us laugh. Affectionately known as Doodle, she always told us to “Be the CEO of your own life”. Our Doodle will be missed.
Crystal is preceded in death by her brother, Creed Lake, her mother Violet Cogar, her father, Willard Clenley Lake, and her grandparents, Murriel and Darrel Arbogast. She is survived by her husband, Richard Godfrey; daughter, Amy Ice, and husband Jason; granddaughters Marleigh and Harper; son, Coby Godfrey and fiancé Cynthia, sisters, Cristy Murray, Cheryl Snider, and Carolyn Cosner; and brother Craig Lake.
Her body was generously donated to science to hopefully advance cancer research. The family will hold a celebration of life in Florida.
