Dr. Ethan Backus, coordinator of the BCHS Math Field Day, announced the top 10 finishers. He explained that these students will participate in the Region IV Math Field Day at WVU Tech later this spring.
Commenting on this year’s turnout for the math competition, Backus said, “I was pleased to see a good turnout this year for Math Field Day. We had more students come out than expected.”
Those who placed in the top 10 were: 1st Place: Mason O’Dell (12th grade), 2nd Place: Cooper Belknap (11th grade), 3rd Place: Owen McCallister (12th grade), 4th Place: Emily Garrett (12th grade), 5th Place: Joel Sigman (11th grade), 6th Place: Jamie Nettles (11th grade), 7th Place: Brynne Davis (10th grade), 8th Place: Brian Davis (12th grade), 9th Place: Alisa Louk (12th grade), and 10th Place: Audrey Duckworth (10th grade)
Two alternates (11th and 12th place) were also announced: 11th Place: Lyla Keener (10th grade) and 12th Place: Bailey McCallister (10th grade).
Referring to some of the top finishers, Dr. Backus noted, “Several of our seniors – Mason O’Dell, Owen McCallister, and Emily Garrett – have participated in the event for several years and their experience definitely helped them excel this year. The overall scores this year were some of the highest I have seen since helping with the event.”
“We also had several new names in the top 10 this year. Joel Sigman and Jamie Nettles are both juniors who showed up and did very well. Brynne Davis and Audrey Duckworth, both tenth graders, did a great job this year by placing in the top 10. Both were able to compete with students who have had several more math classes than they have,” he added.
