Saying goodbye…

Saying goodbye to a loved one or friend is never easy. That is exactly the feeling that I and thousands across the state and nation have after learning about the death of Buddy Griffin. Buddy made quite a mark for himself throughout the United States with his outstanding musical talents. A small part of his legacy is outlined in the front-page article about him. That summary is just the tip of the iceberg. Buddy was an extra ordinary individual.

Even with all the accolades, Buddy never bragged. He was always humble and modest. Few knew he had appeared on the Grand Ole Opry stage over 200 times. I had no idea he had been involved in over 150 recordings. Then there was the special projects like preserving his family’s music. He was very involved in the early days of the bluegrass revolution in Branson, Missouri. That was just some of the things Buddy didn’t volunteer to talk about. He was quick to tell you a story, more likely than not, you may have asked yourself if the story was 100% fact or did Buddy embellish it a little. Regardless, it was always great to see Buddy.

He often stopped by the office to get a little help with a project he was working on. Or… just to talk and joke a while. Regardless of the reason, I always welcomed those encounters. I will deeply miss his visits.

As modest as he was, Buddy was really proud of the Bachelor of Arts Degree program, he established at Glenville State University. Though he never said it, I’m sure it gave him a since of accomplishment, to do something that no one else had ever done. That program is the shining star in the Buddy Griffin legacy as it should be.

I think Buddy’s real gratification in starting the program was knowing how many fledging bluegrass musicians the instruction would aid. He knew it would help keep the music he loved alive for generations to enjoy.

The other thing I remember about Buddy is that he always had a smile on his face. Nor did I ever hear him say an unkind word about anyone.

Buddy Griffin’s musical talent and expertise set him apart from the average man or woman. His love and compassion for his fellow man added to the Buddy uniqueness.

Rest In Peace my friend. You have earned it!
