In a fast-paced and close game, Richwood edged Braxton 44-43 in a game played at Richwood on January 24.
Braxton Coach Nick long reported that the Lumberjacks had “a scoring streak with jump shots and drives to the basket” to begin the game. He explained that a time-out to adjust the Knights’ defense slowed Richwood down “and allowed [Braxton] to pick up [their]transition scoring.” At the half Richwood led 21-18.
The coach attributed the loss to foul trouble for his team and “consistent free -throw shooting by Richwood gave the Lumberjacks the one-point victory. We are proud of how hard the team hustled and didn’t give up this game,” Coach Long said.
Holden Lloyd’s 23 points led the scoring and he also reached his 100-point career mark in the game. Raidyn Davis added 9, Cohen McPherson 7, Lane Lewis, Layden Hines and Rayden Rutherford 2 each.
In a home game the night before, the Knights lost 50-24 to Clay. The Panthers led throughout the game.
Early in the game, Clay went ahead on fast-break points because of the Knights’ turnovers. After Braxton coaches called a time-out, to refocus the team, Braxton drew within one point of the Panthers at the start of the second quarter.
However, a few Knights suffered injuries and others were in foul trouble by the beginning of the second quarter. As a result, Clay led 26-14 at halftime. In second-half action, Clay scored consistently while Braxton was unable to follow their game plan.
Against Clay Braxton’s scoring included Lloyd 5 points, Davis 3, Layden Hines 2,Rutherford 3, Cohen McPherson 2, Charles Vaughn 7 Lane Lewis 2.
The Knights played Gilmer Monday, Calhoun Wednesday and will play Richwood Friday.
