Randel Dane “Rick” Roberts
Randel Dane “Rick” Roberts, 67 of Webster Springs, passed away on Friday, December 6, 2024 at Webster County Memorial Hospital. He was born June 4, 1957 in Sutton to the late Clifford and Lillian Jackson Roberts and retired from Jim C. Hamer Lumber Mill as a mechanic.
Rick attended Elk Valley Chapel, enjoyed hunting, fishing, going on 4-wheeler rides, target practicing, and traveling. Most of all he loved spending time with his family.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister Robin Murphy.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Robin Hamrick Roberts; daughters: Angie (Marshall) Lipscomb and Lela Roberts; brothers: Ronnie (Sue) Roberts, Richie (Nicole) Roberts, Scott Roberts, and Ralph Roberts; sisters: Rose Dale Belcher and Angie (Will) Roberts; grandchildren: Michael (Catlin) Ross, Loralynn, Emma, and John Lipscomb, Dallas (Rebecca) Steele, and Caleb McDonald; great-grandson Maverick Steele; and many nieces, nephews, and extended family and friends to mourn his passing.
Funeral Services to celebrate Rick’s life were held on Saturday, December 14, 2024 at 3:00 PM at Dodd & Reed Funeral Home, Webster Springs, with Pastor Doy Carpenter officiating. Friends joined the family for visitation two hours prior to service time, from 1:00 to 3:00 PM at the Funeral Home.

Michael A. “Dukk” Cutlip
Michael A. “Dukk” Cutlip, of Jumbo passed away on Tuesday, December 10, 2024 at his home with his loving wife by his side.
Born November 28, 1976 in Webster Springs, he was the son of the late Trenton Cutlip and his wife Peggy who survives, and Judy (Hall) Greene. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, who were instrumental in his raising: Daniel and Sue Hall, and his brother: Danny Ray Cutlip.
Dukk loved hunting with his family and friends, making trips up on the lease with Sandy, and looking for flint and ginseng. He enjoyed creating and listening to music, with his favorite being Dead Eternity of whom he was a founding member. He loved to make people laugh. Dukk loved his german shepherd, Karl, playing fantasy football on his Xbox, and watching NFL and College football, with his favorites being the WVU Mountaineers and the Cleveland Browns. He was a family man and enjoyed spending time with those he loved, especially his daughter and bonus kids.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Sandy (Hines) Cutlip; children: Drew Cutlip, Audrey Hamrick (Willy Lewis), Karley Varney, Logan Varney, Jessie Varney, and Rusti Varney; brothers: Scott Casteel (Kim) and Warren Cutlip (fiancé’, Patrick); sister: Brittany Postlewait (JT) and their children: JT and Roxie; aunts: Janet Morton (Jeff Cochran) and Linda Cline; cousin who was raised as a sister, Rachel; best friends and “brothers”: Jonny Payne, Wayne Kelly, Jamie McCourt (Rexanna), Matt White, Kevin Cogar, Conley Cogar, Justin Hines, and Joseph Hines; father and mother-in-law, Junior and Patty Hines; and a host of other relatives and friends to mourn his passing.
Funeral Services to celebrate Dukk’s life were held on Sunday, December 15, 2024 at 2:00PM at Dodd & Reed Funeral Home, Webster Springs, with Pastor Scott Casteel officiating. Interment followed in Hines-Clifton Cemetery, Diana.
Friends joined the family for visitation three hours prior to service time, from 11am until 2pm, at Dodd & Reed Funeral Home.

Departed this life to his Heavenly Home September 29,2024 at the Braxton County Healthcare Center.
IJ’s wife, Beverly Robinson Cottrill, of 66 years preceded him in death January 2024.
A Celebration of life for IJ will be held at the Gassaway Baptist Church in Gassaway West Virginia on Friday December 20, 2024 11:00-2:00 with services at 2:00pm.
Lester Forman Cogar
Lester Forman Cogar, 82 of Webster Springs, passed away on Thursday, December 5, 2024 at United Hospital Center. He was born September 5, 1942 in Laurel Fork to the late Ernie and Rosie Margaret McCoy Cogar. He was a Steel Mill Worker and a member of the Sand Fork Church of God Prophecy.
Lester loved playing music, especially the banjo and guitar, hunting, fishing, gardening, and tinkering with anything with a motor. He found peace in taking care of the lawn at his church. He was a caring, kind man with a great sense of humor.
In addition to his parents, Lester was preceded in death by his brother Aaron Cogar and sisters Lena Cogar and Barbara Haynm.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife Patty Cogar; children Cynthia Burke, Stephen Cogar, and Sonja (Mark) Creps; son-in-law Paul Burke; brothers Hampton Cogar and Jerry Cogar; grandchildren Sarah Burke, Rachel Burke, and Elizabeth Creps; and many nieces, nephews, and extended family and friends to mourn his passing.
Funeral Services were held on Thursday, December 12, 2024 at 2:00 PM at Dodd & Reed Funeral Home, Webster Springs, with Pastor Bryan Groves officiating. Private Burial followed in McCoy Cemetery, Webster Springs.

Dorothy Jean Riffle
Dorothy Jean Riffle, 87, of Cowen passed away Sunday, December 8, 2024, at her home. Dorothy was born August 30, 1937, in Cowen and was the daughter of the late Harry Samuel and Mary Dale Dyer Woods. Along with her parents she was preceded in death by her siblings; James, Eugene, Burton and Richard Woods and also Hilda Friend and Margaret Ocheltree.
Dorothy was on of Jehovah’s Witnesses; she enjoyed being a senior service companion and going to the Webster Springs Senior Citizens Activity building to participate in various games and activities. She was well known throughout the county for her gift of sewing and doing clothing alterations; she also enjoyed cooking, canning, playing cards, quilting, crocheting, spending time at the beach, making peanut butter candy and sugar cookies.
Surviving are her children; Barbara Lane, Cynthia Lough Riffle, Samuel Riffle and Mike Riffle and his wife Tina; a sister, Betty Hammon; 12 grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren.

Mary Jean Hurst
Mary Jean Hurst, 57, of Summersville, formerly of Cowen, passed away on Wednesday, December 11, 2024 in Lewisburg.
Born May 23, 1967 in Richwood, she was the daughter of the late Herman and Betty (Hinkle) Hurst. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her siblings: Faye Cox, James Hurst, Joe Hurst, Hermanetta Brown, Frances Hurst, and Frank Hurst.
Mary was a 1985 graduate of Webster County High School and a past member of the Order of Eastern Star. She was a rather gifted artist and liked to draw and paint. Mary also liked to cook, particularly for her children, whom were her pride and joy. She especially looked forward to being able to spend time with her family.
Left to cherish her memory are her children: Betty and Tamer Abdelgelil; brothers and sisters: Genelda (Woody) Hickman, Irene (Chuck) Cooper, Bill (Libby) Hurst, Dorothy Hurst, Herman (Deloris) Hurst, and Lisa Hurst; and numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends to mourn her passing.
In keeping with Mary’s wishes, she will be cremated and no formal services will be held at this time.

John Hughes
John Hughes ,71, passed from this life on Thursday, December 12, 2024. He was born June 4, 1953 in Elkins and was the son of the late Edward and Vivian Lucille Mace Hughes of Mill Creek, WV. Along with his parents he was preceded in death by his beloved granddaughter, Taitlyn Hughes.
John was a U.S. Air Force Veteran, serving 1971-1975. After service he was employed by SS “Joe” Burford Coal Company 1975-1993 where he rose to VP of Operation, leaving when the company shutdown. He was employed by the United States Postal Service until he retired in 2018. John served as a basketball, baseball and softball coach at Webster County High School and also basketball at Webster Middle School. He made many friends and cherished his relationship with his players; he was not only a coach but also a mentor about just everyday life with his players. John was also an avid turkey and deer hunter; he had a passion for teaching his children and grandchildren. More than anything John loved spending time with his family, he will be dearly missed.
Surviving are his wife, Shelia Rae Hines Hughes, sister, Sherry (Harl) Hughes Thomas; sons, John II (Jamie) Hughes and Christopher (Carrie) Hughes; stepson, William Hatley and stepdaughter, Shawna Hatley; close cousin Michael Mace; grandchildren, Darian Hughes (Colby) Weaver, Kate Hatley (Matt) Lyons, Morgan Hughes, Shae Hines, Logan Hughes, Dylan Hughes, Jet Hines, Brantley Hughes and Xander Hughes; great grandchildren, Colton Weaver, Hayden Lyons and Lydia Lyons; John loved and cherished all his grandchildren and they will miss him tremendously.
Service will be 11:00 AM, Tuesday, December 17, 2024 at Dodd & Reed Funeral Home, Webster Springs with Pastor Bennie Cowger and Elder Keith Hamrick officiating. Burial will follow at Brick Church Cemetery, Huttonsville. Friends my join the family for visitation 6-8 PM Monday evening at the funeral home.

Gary Walsh Helmick, Sr., 88 of Sutton passed away suddenly on Wednesday, December 11, 2024.
He was born on November 3, 1936 the son of the late Basil & Mildred Palmer Helmick. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Esther Marie Helmick.
Gary was a Machinist for Carbidye Steel and was a Army veteran.
He is also survived by two sons, Gary “Butch” Helmick, Jr. (Cheryl Currence) of Frametown, Chris Helmick (Janessia Cool) of Sutton; daughters, Teresa Simmons of McKeesport, PA, Toni Helmick of Denver, CO, Tina Johnson of Gassaway; sister, Charlene Stump of Maryland; grandchildren, Tracy, Frankie, Gary, Shawn, Casey, Breanna K., Bethann, Brooke, Ashley, Cortney, Taylor, Madalyn, Braydon, Collyn, Axeton, Riggston, Brody, Breanna J.; and several great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held 1:00 pm, Tuesday, December 17, 2024 at Greene-Robertson Funeral Home, Sutton with Rev. Paul Helmick officiating. Burial will follow at Braxton Memorial Cemetery, Airport Rd. Sutton. Friends may call from 11:30 am till time of the service.
