Legislative Update… By Lori Dittman WV House of Delegates 63rd District

For well over 300,000 hunters this week is the most wonderful time of the year. The opening week of buck season begins, and it is a big week. Hunting provides $550 million-dollar economic impact on West Virginia. As I was driving through Glenville on Saturday, several hunters were enjoying an evening meal at Mama’s Brick Oven Pie and Pasta. Best of luck to all the hunters. May you have a safe and successful week.
As we look forward to Thanksgiving Day, I am reminded of President George Washington’s Thanksgiving Proclamation. On October 3, 1789, President George Washington issued a proclamation that would set the stage for a cherished American Tradition. It was the first Thanksgiving of a new nation and President Washington, and he saw the Thanksgiving of 1789 as a pivotal moment. He intended to use this occasion to urge citizens of the newly formed nation to unite and withstand the divisive forces that threatened to tear them apart.
President Washington declared Thursday, November 26, 1789, as a day of public thanksgiving and prayer. Washington’s proclamation emphasized the importance of acknowledging the providence of Almighty God, being grateful for His benefits, and seeing His protection and favor. Washington urged the people of the United States to unite in giving thanks for the many blessings they had received, including the opportunity to establish a government for their safety and happiness. He highlighted the nations tranquility, union, and plenty, as well as the civil and religious liberties they enjoyed.
The proclamation was not just a call for gratitude but also a reminder of the responsibility of the citizens and the government. Washington encouraged everyone to perform their duties properly and punctually, to support wise and just laws, and to promote true religion and virtue.
As we celebrate Thanksgiving, let us remember the spirit of unity and gratitude that George Washington envisioned. It is a time to reflect on our blessings, cherish our freedoms, and come together as a nation.
As I continue to reflect on Thanksgiving, I am thankful to the Lord for his blessings, forgiveness, and his love, my family and friends and the Hope that can only come from Him.
“Gratitude can transform common days into thanksgivings, turn routine jobs into joy, and change ordinary opportunities into blessings.”
(William Arthur Ward)
