Gassaway based Mountaineer Food Bank announced today that it has received a $2,500 Project DASH Impact Grant. Project DASH is DoorDash’s initiative to empower food banks, food pantries, and other social impact organizations to deliver charitable food to people experiencing food insecurity.
“Home delivery is vital to areas where food accessibility is limited. Not only does it break down transportation barriers and allow us to reach more of our food-insecure neighbors, but it also provides income to community members who serve as drivers” said Chief Executive Officer of Mountaineer Food Bank, Chad Morrison. “This grant will further drive our efforts to provide nourishment to communities who need it most.”
The Extra Mile program was developed as an extension of our mission to feed West Virginia’s hungry and empower communities to end hunger. This home delivery style distribution program helps to decrease transportation and stigma barriers of food insecure children and their families.
Through partnership with the Board or Education and a human centered design, each distribution is curated around each family’s needs with a goal of containing as much fresh food as possible.
“We’re proud to continue partnering with Mountaineer Food Bank to serve the people of Clay and Mercer Counties,” said Daniel Riff, Head of DoorDash Drive, Government and Nonprofit.
“Each day, our partners across the U.S. work to broaden food access in multiple ways, including by leveraging home delivery. Project DASH helps organizations break down barriers to access and serve vulnerable populations in a convenient and dignified way. We’re excited to see how they leverage the Project DASH Impact Grant and to continue partnering with them.”
Launched by DoorDash in 2018, Project DASH empowers social impact organizations—such as food banks and pantries—to work with Dashers and use DoorDash technology to provide local delivery to their communities. Across the U.S. and Canada, Project DASH has powered more than five million deliveries of an estimated over 80 million meals, saving recipients more than three million hours of their time. To date, Mountaineer Food Bank and Project DASH have powered 10,360 deliveries of an estimated over 340,000 meals to Clay and Mercer County residents.
