I have always been proud of the state we live in for a number of reasons. However, it is interesting to see how the Mountain State stacks up against the rest of the nation in numerous categories.
I’m not sure why, but I get a ton of emails each week that show how we compare to the nation in a host of categories. Some are predictable, others surprising and a lot of them just downright ridiculous.
For instance, this week I received a piece telling me about the states with the safest workplace environments. It was not surprising that West Virginia was not in the top 10. It was also not surprising to find our home state third from the bottom.
When you think about it, that stands to reason with the vast amount of coal mining and timber related job in our state… two of the most dangerous professions on Earth.
I was also not surprised when I opened an email that read: “West Virginia is the tobacco capital of America – as the Mountain State is ranked unhealthiest in the US.” That was a predictable one. Though I have read that smoking and tobacco use in general is down among teens. I guess that’s a start.
I found one a bit amusing… A new study has revealed the states least interested in investing in cryptocurrency, found Mississippi at the top spot. Kentucky ranked as the state second least interested in investing in crypto, with West Virginia following at third. New York was identified as the state most interested in investing in crypto.
One could come up with all kinds of reasoning as to why we are at the top of this survey. Our internet service is still very poor in the Mountain State. Most, if not all, cryptocurrency transaction occurs over the internet. But in reality, I think it’s probably our backwoods ways, which can be a good thing.
West Virginia people would give you the shirt off their back, but keep your paws off their wallet. Mountaineers are noted for helping others and coming to the aid of their fellow man, however, as they should be, they are not as quick to turn over their money to an unknown and unpredictable source such as crypto.
Oddly enough, another survey showed West Virginia as the second least thrifty state in customer spending. That new study has revealed the thriftiest states, as Oregon. I have no idea about this one.
Even with all its ranking, obviously some not very desirable, I am proud to say that I am a Mountaineer… born and raised.
