Playing at home on Wednesday of last week, the Knights continued their unbeaten record with a 45-14 victory over the Wirt Tigers. Definitely pleased with the win and Braxton’s 3-0 record, Coach James King commented, “We get better every week. I saw better tackling. Better blocking. We’ve still got some things to work on, of course, but happy to get the third win of the season. I’m proud of the team.”
After plenty of action, the first quarter of the game ended with Braxton up 26-0. On a tough run, Bryson Moats scored on a 66-yard run to put Braxton up 6-0 following a failed conversion attempt. Ira Ransbottom added the extra point to increase the score to 13-0 after Mason Smarr ran 25 yards for six points.
Braxton added to their side of the scoreboard with a one-yard touchdown run by Colton Putnam and a successful PAT kick by Kallen Meadows to put the score at 20-0. The final score of the first quarter came on a 7-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Josh Hoover to Meadows.
In second quarter action, Moats scored on a 24-yard run. The conversion attempt failed, but Braxton’s lead went to 32-0. A 1-yard touchdown pass from Hoover to Lane Lewis followed by Ransbottom’s successful PAT kick gave the Knights a 39-0 lead going into halftime.
The third quarter was scoreless. Braxton’s next touchdown came on Smarr’s 36-yard run in the fourth. The Knights led 45-0 after a failed conversion attempt.
Wirt managed two late touchdowns and a conversion to put the final score at 45-14.
The Knights will host Calhoun Thursday, Sept. 26, for Braxton’s Homecoming. Looking toward the upcoming game, Coach King noted, “Calhoun beat Summerville this year. Anybody who can get a win over Summersville is a good team.”
Kickoff is at 6:30.
