Government, The Braxton Democrat

Legislative Update… By Lori Dittman WV House of Delegates 63rd District

As Sunday night unfolds, the anticipation grows—the first day of school in Braxton County is just 25 days away, scheduled for August 22nd. Meanwhile, in Gilmer County, students eagerly prepare for their start on August 15th. Time flies, doesn’t it? Summer’s warmth will soon fade, making way for the excitement of new beginnings.
The West Virginia State Sales Tax Holiday, running from August 2nd to August 5th, offers families a chance to save on essential back-to-school items. Whether it is notebooks, backpacks, or fresh sneakers, this tax break eases the transition from summer to the classroom.
County fairs—those vibrant celebrations of community spirit—are kicking off simultaneously in both Braxton and Gilmer counties. Check local newspapers and Facebook pages for schedules. From Ferris wheels to cotton candy, these fairs promise plenty of excitement for all ages.
Governor Justice has declared a State of Emergency across all fifty-five counties due to dangerous drought conditions. The agriculture community needs our support. If you are affected, reach out to the Elk Conservation District in Braxton County (304-765-2535) or the West Fork Conservation District in Gilmer County (304-422-9088). Cost-share funding is available to provide water for livestock during this challenging time.
Thanks to a $150 million supplemental budget appropriation, paving projects are underway. In total, resurfacing efforts will cover a whopping 973 miles of roads across 499 projects. Braxton and Gilmer counties will see numerous projects. As you drive, exercise caution, expect delays, and keep work zones safe.
According to a recent study by Bookipi, West Virginia ranks fourth as the best state for starting a new business. With a 57.08 percent survival rate for new ventures, the state fosters an incredible support ecosystem for entrepreneurs. If you have been contemplating that business idea, seize the moment—help is available.
West Virginia shined brightly during The Southern Legislative Conference. Legislators from 15 southern states experience the beauty, charm, and hospitality of the mountain state. I met with several legislators who were visiting for the first time and said they would return. Policy sessions were informative and inspiring. One education session stood out. Mississippi spoke about the gains they have made in education moving from a national ranking of 50th to 28th in eight years. While they are not where they want to be, the policies they have enacted are working. West Virginia and other states are following Mississippi’s example and investing in education!
Remember, whether it is the buzz of the classroom, the thrill of a fair ride, or the promise of a new venture, West Virginia embraces growth and community.
“The first week of August hangs at the very top of summer, the top of the live-long year, like the highest seat of a Ferris wheel when it pauses in its turning.”
