Legislative Update… By Lori Dittman WV House of Delegates 63rd District

The annual Elk River Summer Float unfolded last Saturday, drawing 230 registered paddlers and floaters. Among them were many visitors from outside the area, including a couple from Florida who have embarked on kayaking adventures in all fifty states and several countries. As the sun danced on the water, paddlers enjoyed the company of family and friends, creating cherished memories during their leisurely day on the river.
My heartfelt gratitude extends to the organizations and tireless volunteers who helped make the event possible: American Water, Braxton CVB, Shiloh Fellowship Church, Elk River Camp and RV, Sports Connection, Adult Education, WVU Medicine, the US Army Corps of Engineers, BCHS Band, Braxton County Schools, Braxton EMS, Gassaway Volunteer Fire Department, Funrecon, Elk River Paddle and Yak, Justin Frame, Judith Boyce, Hershel Rowan, and my incredible family members. Their unwavering support and active participation made for a memorable day, alongside the enthusiastic attendees who immersed themselves in the beauty of Elk River.
On a different note, I am currently writing this column from the charming town of Lewisburg, where I’m attending the Southern Legislative Conference. The policy sessions cover a fascinating array of topics, including “Adapt and Survive: Artificial Intelligence and EdTech in the Classroom,” “Crisis, Interrupted: Implementing Successful Intervention Programs,” “Learning Lab: Harnessing Technology to Strengthen Rural Communities and Small Business,” “Education Roundtable Discussion,” “Women in Leadership Forum,” and “The Future of Transportation.”
During the conference, the Mountaineer Foodbank is leading efforts to package meals for those in need. Interestingly, since the Campaign Against Hunger began at the Southern Legislative Conference, members have collectively packed over one million meals—a testament to SLC’s commitment to supporting communities.
In other news, Governor Justice recently announced over $18.6 million in Appalachian Regional Commission (ARC) grant funding. I was particularly pleased to see that the town of Sand Fork will receive $1,920,000 for the Sand Fork Sewer System Improvements, benefiting 90 residents and enhancing their quality of life.
I would like to offer my condolences to the family of the man who sacrificed his life rescuing his son at Sutton Lake. Many thanks to the various state and local personnel who worked tirelessly in the search for his body to return to his family.
“True love is selfless. It is prepared to sacrifice.”

Lastly, on a personal note, I joined family and friends in celebrating my niece, Elizabeth, and her husband, Dusty, as they eagerly await the arrival of their first child. New babies, as a dear friend once told me, signify that God intends for the world to continue. While new parents often find themselves overwhelmed by the love and care from their loved ones, let us also remember that families need enduring support throughout life’s various phases. After all, life is richer when shared within a supportive community.
I look forward to hearing from people in the district and hope to see you out and about enjoying all the great things our area has to offer. I can be contacted at lori.dittman@wv house.gov or 304-701-8600.
