2022 crash results in negligent homicide charges against Flatwoods woman

A 2022 fatal accident that claimed the life of a Sutton man has resulted in the arrest of a Flatwoods woman, one day shy of a year after the incident occurred.

The accident occurred on September 6, 2022, when an automobile, driven by Brittany Jo Williams of Stone Run Road, Flatwoods crossed the center line just north of the Flatwoods Go-Mart on Route 4/19 and struck a vehicle driven by John Baker of Sutton. According to Captain B. A. Scarbro’s criminal complaint, Williams was overheard at the scene saying she was texting when the accident occurred.

Captain Scarbro’s investigation revealed that Williams, 35, had been convicted of driving under the influence in June 2016. She was subsequently charged in June 2020 with driving while license suspended. A third charge resulted from the 2022 accident.

Williams was formally charged with negligent homicide and driving while license suspended 3rd offense on September 7, 2023. She was arraigned before Braxton County Magistrate Beth Smith when she was released after posting bonds totaling $6,000 to await additional court proceedings.
