Flatwoods PSD to conduct Smoke Testing in Gassaway

The Flatwoods-Canoe Run Public Service District, in conjunction with the Town of Gassaway and E. L. Robinson Engineering will begin smoke testing the sanitary sewer lines in the Town of Gassaway during the week of April 10, 2023. Smoke testing will be done Monday through Friday from the hours of 9:00AM to 5:00PM. Testing may be delayed to later in the week or until the following week due to inclement weather.

These tests will assist in locating breaks and defects in the sewer system. During the test, residents may see white smoke coming from vent stacks on building, down spouts on houses and business or from holes in the ground. FCRPS officials emphasize that residents should not be alarmed. The smoke has no odor, is non-toxic non-staining, does not create a fire hazard, and will dissipate in a few minutes.

Before the smoke tests are conducted, residents and business owners should pour water into their basement floor drains, and into any unused showers, bathtubs or commodes. They can seal any other open drains by placing a wet towel or cloth over the drain. This will seal the drain and/or drain traps so the smoke will not enter the building through the drain.

“If smoke should enter your building during the test, it probably means there are defects in the plumbing that could allow dangerous sewer gas to enter,” explained a Flatwoods representative. “Please note the location of the smoke and call the District business office at 304-765-2300 to arrange a meeting with District personnel. Open doors and windows to ventilate any smoke that enters the building.”

Anyone who has any of the following situations, should make arrangements prior to the beginning of smoke testing:

• A person who will be alone and is an invalid or sleeping during the test.

• Any individuals with respiratory problems who will be in the building.

• Elderly persons who will be alone and might be alarmed or confused if they see smoke.

• Dogs, birds or other pets that will be confined alone in the building during the test.

Anyone with additional questions regarding the smoke test, should call the District’s business office at 304-765-2300.
