On Monday, September 19, a gathering of several groups took place in the Town of Sutton to acknowledge and recognize efforts put forth for a beautification project at the Town’s community garden.
Suzanne McGown, a WVU Extension Master Gardner and member of Judy’s Garden Club, Appalachian District, has been working this year with Sutton Elementary School students on the beautification project. The Sutton Community Development Council had established a community garden located at the Sutton Branch of the City National Bank and several groups dedicated their time and resources to help develop space.
The Town of Sutton, Mayors Office was represented by Robin Smith at Monday’s event. Bank official, Lisa Conant was present along with City Council member, Beth Atkins. Each student was presented a certificate for their hard work. Judy’s Garden Club members were also among the groups present.
City National Bank has provided a community garden spot which includes garden containers, a picnic area and resting benches. The bank also provided access to water which made a huge difference in the maintenance of the project. With coordination from Suzanne McGowan, students planted vegetables, herbs and flowers. The plants for this project were donated by Martha Cochran and Melissa Dennison. An extra shout out to two students, Laura Puckett and Kearney Maxwell, Girl Scouts members, who dedicated their time by watering and doing a bake sale to raise money for berry plants and bushes to continue this community project next year. A big thank you to Allie Rhodes, 4H Member for her efforts this summer by watering and maintaining the gardens.
“We all look forward to continuing this project in the future. Thanks to all who made this project possible,” said a Judy’s Garden Club spokesperson.
