Shirley Hyre named to Envirothon Hall of Fame

NCF Envirothon recently bestowed the 2022 Envirothon Hall of Fame award on Shirley Hyre at the competition event held at Miami University in Oxford Ohio.
This award recognizes the achievements and dedication of outstanding NCF Envirothon program representatives who have directly influenced, impacted and promoted Envirothon.
Envirothon is a national competition for teams of high school students in an outdoor setting with testing stations in forestry, soils, wildlife, aquatics, and a current environmental topic. Shirley was instrumental in bringing Envirothon to West Virginia, and is assisting in organizing WV’s 25th Celebration this fall. This Celebration event will bring together past committee members, team members, advisors, sponsors and many others who have helped shape the WV Envirothon program into what it is today.
WV Envirothon Committee’s nomination stated “Shirley is quite literally the face of the WV Envirothon, not just because she has been there from the beginning, but because she is also the program’s biggest cheerleader. Dedicated, passionate, persistent, and a voice of reason.”
Involved with WV Envirothon since it’s infancy, she’s mothered the program to what it is today, and also claims a title of grandmother to the program as children of original students are competing today. Many can say they’ve grown up in the WV Envirothon, and Shirley was there every step of the way. She stresses the importance of Envirothon, and understands that it’s more than a competition, “it’s a life experience.”
