Mother’s Day blaze claims elderly woman

An early morning fire on Mother’s Day, May 8, claimed the life of an 88 year old Braxton County resident. The blaze, at 93 Jacks Lane near Curry Ridge Road was detected when owners of cattle who rented a portion of the property came to feed the animals. Their initial call to the Braxton 9-1-1 Center stated that the structure was on the ground at the time of discovery.

Braxton Control dispatched Flatwoods Community Volunteer Fire Department at 7:10 a.m. as well as Sutton and Burnsville VFDs to provide mutual aid.

After extinguishing the blaze firefighters discovered the body of what is believed to be the lone occupant of the home, 88-year-old Faith Kidd, in what was the bathroom area of the home.

State Fire Marshals were on scene to investigate. The remains were taken to the State Medical Examiners office for positive identification and determination of the cause of death. The investigation into the cause of the blaze is ongoing at press-time. The six responding members of the Flatwoods VFD along with two apparatuses as well as six member of Burnsville and five from Sutton were on scene for several hours extinguishing the blaze and assisting in the investigation.
